Does anyone know if you can rent HD-DVD's or BR-DVD's from video stores yet, or is there no significant market for that yet?

Blockbuster and Netflix both have HD-DVD.

Thanks for the reply. I rarely watch a movie more than once which means I will rent, so I may start researching getting an HD-DVD player. I heard the AX1 is built like a tank, and has a backlit remote plus superior sound capabilities. There is a good review on it at "the digital bits" web site.

I've been very happy with my XA1. Great HD and SD upconversion PQ and a great CD player too.

I think Netflix has more HD-DVD movies listed than are actually out and if you throw it in your queue but it is not released it will automatically move to your queue when it DOES get released. There are something like 30+ movies released in this format so far.

As far as The Digital Bits goes I wouldn't put to much stock in Bill Hunts reviews. He has already shown a decided bias in favor of BD, but if his (amended) review got you interested in HD-DVD he has not tried hard enough. :D

Actually there are many excellent reviews out there for the HD-DVD, but make sure you check the date of the review. The first ones came out BEFORE the substantial firmware update that solved most of the initial problems.

Enjoy!

What were the initial problems -- thanks.

Some of the first players had some issues reading the HD_DVD discs if they were not perfectly clean and some discs coming directly out of the box were not clean. There were some early glitches with the HDMI connections also.

The version 1.2 firmware fixed just about all of them, and there is a new 1.4 version coming out this week to resolve any remaining HDMI issues. Toshiba is taking this format very seriously and with the 1.4 update, will have 3 updates in less than 4 weeks. This is almost unheard of for a CE company to be this responsive to resolve issues.

I have heard that after the 1.4 update, they will will be adding more features to the player via firmware. It is very easy for them to do this because the players include an ethernet port on the back to download & update it directly from Toshiba's servers.
