My LG DLP just died. HELP!

LG RU52SZ51D DLP rear-projection television.

Just recently this started happening:
Watch the TV for about 20 minutes, then the picture wiill freeze. When it freezes, the display looks like a "sketch" effect in photoshop, and is only black/white. No color. The sound continues.

It will stay on this same picture for as long as you leave it.
Power the unit off, then back on.

After the usual warm-up buzz you hear, it makes a loud kind of screetching-whirring noise. The picture or sound never comes up. This will continue until the lamp indicator blinks red, and the unit powers itself off.

(Lamp flashing red = "problem with lamp or around it" per the owners manual. )

After several tries, and waiting a few minutes, it will power up normally. So it is not totally fried, but something has to be on the way out.

It sounds almost like the color wheel is rubbing against something, is off balance, or bearing is fried. When the TV works, it works fine. I am planning on getting the TV in for service during the week, but the suspense is killing me, I need some ideas from you guys. Does this even sound serviceable? Is anything inside the light engine serviceable? i sure hope so, because I cannot afford a new one. :o

Hi there. This exact problem just started happening to my LG DLP. I had two quick power failures, so i'm wondering if that caused the problem.

did you ever get it fixed ? what was the problem and how much was the repair ?

Thanks in advance.

This was happening to an older 42" Samsung DLP that we had in our store about a year ago. In that instance, it was the light engine.

For the cost of the repair, you would be better off getting a new TV.
