I have DirecTv at my house that I use currently. I have a DirecTv dish on my cabin. Should I be able to bring my reciever to my cabin and have it work? Is there anything special I need to do to make it work?
Thanks.

As long as it's aimed in the right direction you won't have any problems. Unless your locals are on a spot beam and your other location is out of it's sight. If you live in NY or LA you won't even have that problem.

I do get locals at my home. Not sure what you mean by "spot beam" and it being out of sight though. The cabin would not share the same locals as my house.

Then you won't get the locals, but you will get everything else.

I am having trouble getting this to work. No idea why.

When I try to set up the receiver, I get no signal. How close do I have to be with where the dish is pointing? I think I have it very, very close, but perhaps I am just a wee bit off and this is why we can't get a signal? I don't just get a bad signal, I'm pretty sure I am getting absolutely NO signal.

Any ideas how I can diagnose what is going on?

Thanks.

This is less than exact, but sometimes when I have problems with getting a signal I'll put the dish in the general region of the sky and scan back and forth. It's tedious, but often you'll eventually stumble across the signal. The dish, however, has to be pretty spot on lined up. A degree or two down here translates to a lot of difference 27,000 miles away.

Did you run your zip code in the receiver to determine your starting point for settingg up your dish.
Keep in mind when setting up, you need to ba perfectly plumb on your mast. other wise you will be way off when pointing into the sky.
