How's the R15?

Hi all...

I have mostly HD gear throughout the place, but I have a guest room where I'd like a SD box and recorder.

Even though it's non-HD, could anyone here give me an opinion on the R15?

Is it a good piece of gear? Or would I be better off just getting an older DirecTV w/Tivo off eBay?

Thanks, and I apologize for the non-HD question.

I prefer the Tivo boxes myself. The DTV DVR's to me are quirky, but really... it doesn't matter.

I don't like the fast foward function on the DTV DVR. To me, it was easier with the Tivo.

I agree with HITDOG , R-15 are OKay yet very finicky , but if you can get hold of
R-10 (Tivo ) on eBay you will like it .

We have both...I have the R 15 in the bed room and my wife has the TIVO R-10 in the family room. For ease of use, the R 10 is the way to go. The R-15 has grown on me, and once all it's claimed abilities are on line I think it will be one darn good box. The only thing I miss is the auto 8 second rewind when you stop the fast forward. I love the status/use bar on the 15.

To Tell you the truth my friends, I wish Directv had kept their relationship with the Microsoft Ultimatetv, their service price was a bit pricey, but their receiver were top rate. I'm still trying to figure out why they didn't design the R15 or any of their newer receivers to come as close to the magnificent Ultimatetv Receivers as possible without compromising or breaking old contracts.
The R15 and all their new receivers stinks, the receivers are too loud, you don't have the PIP capabilty of the Ultimatetv and Directv customer service is going to hell. I hope someone else can change my opinion.

You are absolutely right. I have had 6 or 8 tivos and now have 10-250, but the Ultimate from MSFT was much more responsive and set recording in microseconds instead of waiting and waiting. I keep thinking maybe they will put HD version of Ultimate in next version of operating system

Thanks for the replies....

I took your advice, and got a DirecTV Tivo, the SD R40 off eBay.

Except for invalid access cards sent by the dealer, the unit is fine....it even upgraded to new firmware which allows the recorded shows to be organized by title if you wish, instead of just by the recording date.

I will return the R15. Too slow, too clunky.

And, I couldn't help notice that on the R15 they call recorded shows "My Video on Demand." IMHO, a pathetic attempt to copy the cable companies' "On Demand."

Thanks again.
