Interesting.....now if they can guarantee that I will get a free upgrade to the mpeg4 hd dvr I will jump all over this. I just don't want to shell out any more $$ to these guys than I have to.

Does anyone know whether the HD DVR they are offering is MPEG2 or the yet to be released MPEG4 receiver?

If they are only offering the MPEG2 one, can we advise them to wait to ship us one till the new one is out?

Does anyone have a feel for when the new one will be released?

Blade316
06-02-2006, 10:18 AM
We are only offering the Mpeg 2 since Mpeg 4 has not been released yet. The word that we are suppose to tell cust and the only info that I give my agents and what I am being told is the HR-20 will be released Late Summer.

Answer to second question, no we can not hold to ship the hd-dvr until the new one is released it either call now and get the mpeg4 or call later and take your chances since this is a limited time offer. When the auto-renewel ends and starts getting billed this offer is over.

What if u already have one HD DVR, will they offer you another one if u do this, or is this just for people who dont have one?

Customer eligible for 1 primary offer per 12 months.

The one part of this offer that concerns me is that when the HR20 comes out you may not be able to take advantage of other offers if you are only allowed 1 primary offer per 12 months.

That could work to ur advantage. Let the bugs get worked out before u go into the HD DVR.

Even if they come out with a DirecTV DVR, it will likely be a crappy unit (or at least the UI will not be as developed). Also, until they release additional MPEG-4 channels (no timetable that I am aware of), the utility of this new DVR is next to 0 compared to the current unit.

I got a free upgrade to Superfan and a free HD DVR when I called this morning... the CSR was very surprised that I knew about this. :)

easier way to get the offer is to:

To order receiver, customers call number on mailer (888) 531-1334 and mention code DVR4U2

Choose from:
Free Interactive Receiver
Free DIRECTV Plus DVR
Free HD Receiver
Free HD-DVR

I just called that number, told them the deal and was rebuffed. They said it was only available to customers who received the flyers and they have a database with who's eligible. I told them to cancel my NFL package then -- and they did. So it didn't work for me.

New guy here, nice site:

I got all excited when I saw this. Used the DVR4ME code a while back and got a directivo for shipping only. On my account at Directv when I try to order any HD equipment it only shows the SD stuff. I tried the code there and they offered me a choice of a recorder or standard receiver FREE, just no HD offered.

Never mind. I called back to the generic dtv line, and this time I got it. They are shipping me another HR10-250, free.

hahaha.

This is pretty funny. Since I am a total choice plus, there is no tivo fee for this, either.

He also threw in superfan for free, instead of the 50 dollar charge it would have been for me based on a post card I got yesterday.

I basically lied to him and said I got a flyer in the mail offering this, and he bought it hook, line, sinker.

Actually, they are not shipping it, for some reason they have to come install it, but who cares, it's free. Seems silly to me that they are sending a dude out just to swap out my R-15, but whatever.

You all make me sick!!! Always tryn to get something for free. How about some integrity and loyalty to the company you work for.

Providing inside information is a disgrace and if you work for DTV or a outside contractor, you will be dealt with. IP addresses can be traced and it's just a matter of time once the authorities are notified.

Good Luck!!!

I'd also like to add, DTV has been ripping me off for years. Hardly did I get anything for free. I extended my deal 1 year with them for it, and Ive paid them 1,000s in equipment and service over the years.

In fact, I hope more DTV employees leak this kind of info so the consumer can fight back and get what they deserve.

And, what they deserve is to not pay 600 bucks for an HD DVR that is going out of commission in a year.

I've been with them since inception. They sold a dual dish but you had to buy each SD receiver seperate at $600 a piece. When my original box fried last year, I had to buy another unit to have the privilige of paying $100 a month to get the service.

After having the NFL package since it came out, you'd think they would just send you a HD-DVR as a thanks for your support.

Now I see the packages they offer require a monthly lease fee for the equipment.

When you call, make sure to say that you want to cancel your NFL Sunday ticket. That's when they will give you the HD-DVR offer for "free". What's the worst they will do, actually cancel your NFL Sunday ticket subscription? You can always call back later and add it back on.

Also there is no way they are going to get an IP address unless the owner of this board would give it to them(D*) and since there is no laws being broken..........it wont happen. Also I think it is a good thing for an employee to show the consumer all the breaks he/she can get. I call that a great sales person:)

DTV corporate has already been notified. They have the website and this thread. Any orders for the equipment if it has not already been shipped thru FED-EX or UPS will be placed on hold. Any orders that went out before it could be stopped contains a tracking #. On the box itself the RID # and Access Card # is listed. How doe's it feel to have received a piece of expensive equipment that you can't use????

For your info, the person who sent out the info and placed it on this website was the person I speakin to in regards to fraud!!!

DTV values all their customers. If you have a problem, they will attempt to resolve the issue to both the customer's satisfaction and the company's satisfaction. But the person who sent this out, I'm glad they do not work for Federal Government, because we all would be in a world of hurt.

Think about that... Loyalty is rare. I bet he cheats on wife, has a low self-esteem. Doesn't have many friends and will kiss all of your ass's ( or people who could really care less about the traitor)because he probably needs to feel accepted. I understand.. there is help available..

None of that will happen or has happened. I just got off the phone with DTV, and the offer still is in place for qualifying homes.

Nice try.

See, that isn't how DTV is doing the promotion. They are not shipping anything to anyone. They are sending a personal tech to each home.

No tracking numbers, no nothing.

U just proved that ur not only full of it, but u are just trying to act cool. None of what u stated above is how the promotion works.

The promotion is still in full effect.

I told him about this Octavious joker.. he laughed. He said DTV wants to get rid of these, that they had 100's just here in the Columbus area office alone... think about how many are around the country.

He said that this won't be the only promotion for a free one, either.

 Yeah, especially since most cable companies & Dish Network provide most, if not all of their equipment for free, like this was supposed to be a major budget buster for D*? Buy a clue, it was someone pretty high up in the management foodchain that authorized this offer in the first place. I suspect this offer goes bye-bye when the stock of soon to be obsolete H250's dries up.

And I thank you for that :) I've been eyeballing HD Tivo for a while, especially with my Tivo currently freezing every few days, and was just waiting for some sort of awesome deal that would cost me next to nothing. I wasn't about to spend $400 on top of a lease fee.

The only extra I paid was for the OTA antenna -- she would not budge on that one, though she did "waive" the $19.99 shipping fee. Even better, they are coming out Tuesday to install.

Well I really thought this post was a joke but I had to try so I just called to cancel and sure enough...BOOM my ticket is gone:mad: So I sat here dumbfounded for a minute then called right back and told them that I just cancelled but when my "friend"(yes hitdog you are my friend:hithere: ) cancelled they offered the hd-dvr and superfan upgrade FREE so they passed me on to John who poked around my account and finally said "well sure, we can do that"...ok so I'm dancing a jig here, we are going to return our newegg dvr and save $400(-15% restock fee, lol).

Anyway all I can say is

The key is not to tell them ur canceling. Key point is to call, tell them ur paying too much for equipment, and if you continue to pay for the NFL, u'd like to speak to retention about getting a free HD DVR.

What I did was tell the CSR that I was cancelling ST because of the price increase, and that they had finally priced it out of my range with this increase. She said she would have no trouble processing it, and she paused for a bit, let out a "Hmmm..." and told me she was authorized to present me with this special offer ... at this point, she offered me the HD equipment. I then asked if all the games would be in HD, and she said I needed Superfan, and she would throw that in for free. The key, I think, is to keep asking questions about the service and features, and you will most likely get those features tossed into the deal. And above all, be pleasant.

Funny thing though, I called a friend of mine to tell him about the deal I got because I knew he was thinking of cancelling his ST because of a new baby & the financial hit that entails. He said he already cancelled two days prior, and he got none of what I got -- they just accepted his cancellation with no resistance whatsoever. So, ymmv ...

Called D*TV while watching Brazil beat up on Australia today for the World Cup and because of you guys I was offered the H-10 HD DVR as well as the Superfan package free for this season. My only out of pocket cost for all this was the $19.95 shipping fee (the rep would not budge on waiving the fee "You're getting over $400 worth of equipment and programming for free." LOL).

The rep also said that when the H-20 DVR's are released that I can upgrade the H-10 DVR for the H-20 DVR for only $99 (I haven't seen that piece of info posted on this thread - I don't think.)

If D*TV offers a rebate for the new H-20 DVR like they did for the H-20 set top box last year then I'll gladly take the upgrade when it's available.

I wouldn't have this great story to tell if not for you guys. So thanks and lets see if we can wiggle more free stuff from D*TV.

thank you guys for this info, so I'll pass along what happened to me...

I bought the hd-dvr from directv unfortunately before I saw this post for 500 dollars, which included the installation and all that. Using the information I read here, I called directv and complained that I was being shafted for not "lying" about cancelling the football order (I thought this was the only route to go on since I already had the receiver installed), and since I have been with them since 2000 and had almost all of their sports packages, I should be given it for free.

The rep for directv countered by offering me a 125 credit. I said no way, and he went to 180. Once again, I told him that was an insult, and he said his max offer for credit on the account was 250. I still complained, telling him I was insulted, etc. etc, so after about 15 minutes of arguing, he offered me 20 dollars off my total choice programming for 6 months. I decided this was the best I was probably going to get, so I accepted it, and saved 250+120=370 dollars, pretty sweet, seeing as though I didn't know I could get anything back.

Brother, you gotta call back and see if you can get Superfan free this season.

When I called yesterday I was told I would have to be connected to the Sunday Ticket retention dept. (it's probably all the same retention dept but wanted to make me feel special - LOL) so I would suggest you specifically ask for them.

I'm going to call again tonight and see if I can get more stuff.

Thanks for the post. I just bought a 42" LG HD Plasma and needed to upgrade to a HD DVR anyway. When I called DTV the CSR first pushed to spread my bill over 7 months or offer the Super Fan package for free. With some fishing I was able to get her to offer the HD DVR.

For those of you who get NFL ticket and will be forced to get the SF package to get the games in HD should call and get Super Fan for free.

easier way to get the offer is to:

To order receiver, customers call number on mailer (888) 531-1334 and mention code DVR4U2

Choose from:
Free Interactive Receiver
Free DIRECTV Plus DVR
Free HD Receiver
Free HD-DVR

You can use the code DVR4U2 on Directv's website for ordering additional receivers. The HD DVR is not an option but the 100 hour Directv Plus receiver (The R15 model I believe) is with free shipping and installation. If anyone chooses this model online you should have no out-of-pocket expense.

I decided to grab this one in addition to the HR10-250 I spoke of earlier.

I just wanted to say thanks for posting this thread. I've been looking at HDTVs but as a DirecTV subscriber I just couldn't see paying what they want for an HD DVR and I didn't want to cancel DirecTV in favor of cable because I would lose Sunday Ticket.

Now I have an HD DVR on the way for $19.95 plus SuperFan for free and the equipment is leased so I get a free upgrade to the MPEG-4 equipment when it comes out in July plus a new 5 LNB dish when they get HD local channels in my area. Until then I have the off-the-air antenna.

Also, the rep I talked to said next year DirecTV will have 135 HD channels once the technology upgrade is complete. It sounds good but we'll see how it turns out. Marketing-speak to reality generally doesn't make the transition well.

Again, thanks for everyone who posted their advice on how to make this happen. I'm off to buy my new HDTV tomorrow. :)

I had/have the NFL, NHL, NBA, MLS and MLB packages on my account. When I heard about the upgrade offer I was not phased, as I really did not want to keep all these packages. There is only so much sports a married man with a stay at home mom/wife with a 2-year old can watch. I had already made up my mind to cancel the auto-renew on NFL, NBA and NBA. To cut a long story short, I was talked into keeping the NFL with the superfan fee waived, a DVR now, and an upgrade to the new one later, and my payments broken up into seven parts. The MLS and MLB were not a part of the deal, as I do not want these when the season ends. BTW, I watched less than five games on MLS so far.

My point is, some of us want things for free, but believe me when I say that these offers are not free. They will get it back one way or the other. I will utilize the DVR mainly for Good Eats, Formula One, and international soccer. I always wanted a DVR, but I was unwilling to pay for it in one payment. Now I am paying for it via NFL ST <shrug>. This might be the cheaper route, and I get to watch the Dolphins at the same time.

I made the call last night and my offer was slightly different. I received the free SF, the 5-LNB dish installed, the H20, and $99 off of my ST price.

I can't decide if I got the short end of the stick not getting the HD DVR, but then again $99 in my pocket is more important to me than the DVR. Any thoughts?

I confirmed the order with the CSR several times and had her update my account in case of any problems when the order arrives. The offer allows you to 4 diferent pieces of equipment & I did order HD-DVR. When I said free I didn't mean they gave me the entire farm:

We can safely assume that they have container-loads of these digital video recorders that they are trying to unload. If they flood the market with the "free offer" and bind us to a two year extension and charge us a lease fee, I am sure that they will make a decent profit. Maybe they do not have enough to give to those that never subscribed, but they have enough of the ST subscribers to show the NFL that their renewal % is high <shrug>. We can guess for months, but we will all be watching SF at the same time.

I have been with them from 1997, and I have an attic filled with receivers to show for it. Yes, we are all drinking the kool aid, and the majority of us are going back for more.

DTV to me is like someone who you want to break up with, but you have so much invested, both in time and money. I dont mind the service or the content, and that is just my opinion.

This is only given if you already subscribe to the NFLST last year and are threatening to cancel the renewel of the package.

Thats not true. I have only been with Dtv for 6 months and never purchased the ST. I called the retention number someone posted on a different thread (can look for it if needed). Anyhow, the rep I spoke to was cool, I simply mentioned that there was a special I heard of about a free dvr if I sign up for ST. He laughed and said (we've been gettin a lot of calls lately). To make a long story short, I got a free hr10-250 and free superfan for the price of sunday ticket plus 19.00 shipping for the receiver. I never demanded anything or threatened to cancel (which I cant, just started 6 moths ago).

This was about 3 weeks ago. The tech came out and installed the hr10-250 this past saturday. Tech made a mess of my wires and now says I need a 5x8 multiswitch to continue using my off air attenna, that they would not cover. Called back Dtv and they agreed to reimburse me for the multiswitch. So all in all, got a great deal and happy with their sevice.

The big difference is that you called the retention number, if you call a regular installation group rep they cannot offer that offer unless you have the nflst, crg can offer pretty much anything you want for free. Everyone else can not.

You really don't even need to say you are going to cancel NFL. Search for the Retention Dept # (google search or maybe in this thread). I called them and stated I heard that ST holders were getting a free HD Tivo if they were going to drop it, and could I get that deal...they said no problem. They are getting rid of surplus for the new DVR that comes out in the future. If you never need mpeg4 locals, this is a great deal on a box that should last for years until the mpeg4 national channels begin launch.

There is no commitment to Tivo that you have to agree to. It is the same fee as when the HR20 comes out. The DVR fee is 5.99 for as many DVR's as you want. If you have the platinum package the fee is waived.

Has anybody that has already been charged for ST and paid most of it on a monthly basis been able to get this deal? Like a fool, I clicked yes to bill me for next season a couple of months ago and would obviously love to get in on this deal.

Thanks for any help here.

You can still get this deal (you're already ahead of the game since you are renewing your existing ST/SF subscription). When you call ask for the retention dept and let them know what you'd like to do (free Superfan, free hd-dvr, free OTA antenna, free HD programming for 6 months, etc).

I've found that if you're nice and friendly toward the CSR's, they'll give you whatever you want - before you ask for it.

Well I called the retention number and inquired about "an offer" that I heard about which provides a number of options such as free ppv, hd-dvr and so on. I told her thatt I was interested in the HD-DVR since I am tired of dealing with the old VCR. I told her that I was considering go back to cable for a free hd-dvr offer and that I was a renewing ST member of over three years, still no dice. She did offer a few freebies on SF and Showtime but that was about it. I told her that I would be returning to cable once the NFL season is over. I even told her that I don't want to throw out that kind of money ($399.00) for a product that is going to be upgraded in the near future only to shell out more cash. She informed me that they would probably be offering some special deal for people who recently bought the older DVR to upgrade but that still amounts to a "who knows what it will be" scenario.

Ugh!

I would call back. You'll most likely get a different CSR. Some folks have had luck on the 3rd call. Keep trying.

If you call saying you want a "hand-out" I am sure the CSR will not be willing to give you anything. We all know that it is not the CSR's equipment, but he/she might not like the fact that you want something for free.

You are most likely being associated with people that call radio stations and ask for free stuff and do not even know what the free stuff is!!

When I called I was honestly willing to cancel the renewal on my NBA, NHL, MLS and NFL. In the long run I am keeping NFL with all the extras and I am being upgraded to the next DVR when that comes out.

(the new DVR could be a he said/ she said so I am not holding out hope)

The short form is: if you are looking for a freebie you need "game".

I took the 24 free PPV movies that they were offering. I wont even purchase a HDTV until you can get more channels with DTV or Cable. I got a flyer in the mail with the offers. Phone # is 1-888-531-1344. It also has the DTV HD DVR Receiver in there. Also get 40 issues of Sports illustrated. :)

Ohhh sheese,

I was looking for a free hand out and told them so. I told them I did not want to give up ST. What is wrong with a free hand out? I have been loyal to D* for 8 years and subcribed to ST for 8 years. Don't you think to us loyal customers they should do something instead of all the people that call and threaten them that they are going to drop D* or their packages? Is it them(people that threaten) that should receive all the freebies?

Also I think being truthful with them worked out great. Hell I wanted the HD DVR for along time but was not going to pay hundreds of dollars for it.

Also it sure sounds like the freebies you were offered made you keep the ST. Why not tell them you thought freebies were wrong and still drop the packages?

I have more game than you will ever have.

Yep, you just keep whining to D* and getting the freebees:hithere:

Actually that is my first freebee ever from them and no whining required. Just the truth in my communication with them. Something you seem to lack.

You seem to want to play the "Moral Card" If so send back your freebie and drop the ST then we can talk.

Atleast "some" of the other people here called up on purpose to threaten to drop the ST so they could get the DVR and were honest in saying so here on the board. I just called up and told them what I was reading on the web about it and got one.

Let me say it again since you say I lack communication skills.... YOU HAVE THE LAST WORD, SO MOVE ON AND QUIT WHINING AND GETTING PERSONAL.

This forum is about expressing an opinion whether you agree with it or not. I have accepted yours and you have a problem with mine.

Go ahead and respond to this post and kill the thread, but I still believe that begging for freebies is beneath all of us, but you are an exception. Are you happy now?

Getting personal??? Dude you started the personal stuff. You got your freebie so stop your whining. Turn in your new TIVO and drop the ST. Then I will be happy. In other words D* bought you with "bribes"

Here is a scenario I have not read about yet.... I just signed up for new D* service and they had a promotion for NFL sunday ticket best offer. It includes the 250 channel package and a free upgrade to a "regular DVR" or HD receiver. The cost is $69.99 for 4 months and includes Sunday ticket and the premium package with HD.I order the regular DVR not wanting to pay the premium for the HD DVR. As a new subscriber (was with D* about 3 years ago for a total of 7-8Yyrs though) does anyone think calling retention and upgrading to the HD DVR will work? Has anyone tried it with this scenario. I am getting the service installed next Tuesday 8/15 so I am not even a D* customer yet or I would try it now. I also did pay to add the HD receiver, $99.00.

I've called twice now and nothing!
They're are installing my DirectTV this monday, so I'm technically not a customer yet. And I saved a lot with that 4 months free deal.

Could this be why they're not allowing me to have a free hd-dvr upgrade and free Superfan?

if you already have the hd h20 tell them you are going to cancel it all because the mix channels dont work with that receiver.. you cannot scroll through the channels on the mix channels, any of them not just the super fan but the news, kids, and the sports. and they will set you up with the new receiver ... but it is going to be like 2 or 3 weeks because it is just now rolloing out in california..

i got it noted to my account i will get the hr15-250 when it becomes available, i also got the superfan for free.. and yes i did call back and ask for crt dept and its true she did note the account... it was noted by a supervisor. i am not going to post her name :)

Honestly, how long have you had directv?
I don't even have it until monday!!
Some of them said I can not get anything else free because of what I'm already getting, with the free 4 months, and free upgraded recievers I'll be getting $600+ free. That came out of almost every mouth when i called over and over.

Yes!!!!

I am a new poster here and wanted to thank this thread and forum. My father-in-law was going to get some HD equipment, so I was going to cancel my ST online and just forget about it. I have been wanting an HD DVR since last year, but the budget would not allow. I figured I'd give it a shot and if I got nothing it was no big.

Well, after getting transfered to Sales by mistake, then hung up on, I finally got Steve. When I told him why i was canceling, he offered me the HD DVR for free to keep ST. I got the DVR, 4 months of HD programming, and free S&H and installation.

I'm scheduled for the 8th of september for the install, but I'm gonna call tomorrow and see if I can get a sooner date.

Thanks again highdefforum for the tip

Josh

PS: I was already getting a $49.00 credit for Superfan due to last years equipment issues, so I am still paying $50 for Superfan, but with all the other stuff Steve threw in, I wasn't going to push it.

Just 2 weeks ago, I had a buddy call and get the HD-dvr and Superfan package. I had actually already called, threatened to quit and got superfan for free, but after reading this, I called back again and got a 2nd hd-dvr for my house. I'm hoping to punch them both up to hd20's in a month or so (with any luck) but wanted to send thanks to this forum for helping people get the hookup!:yippee:

This could be the thread that never ends so I guess I'll do my part to keep it going.

It took me all of 8 minutes to call the previously listed number for customer retention (1-800-531-5000) and speak to a very pleasant CSR (female :D ) who quickly offered to give me Superfan for free.

Although it was a bit of a ruse, I do wholly believe in what I told her. When she asked how she could help me I told her I wanted to drop Sunday Ticket. She said that she could help me with that and then asked if I enjoyed having it last year. I told her yes. She then asked why I was dropping it and I told her because I don't feel that I should have to pay $99 for Superfan since I already pay a heavy price for Sunday Ticket and HD programming. She said "well I can help you with that, I can give it to you since you are one of our best customers". Done deal. She was very sweet and compentent, and like I said, it took all of 8 minutes. I do feel that they shouldn't be charging extra for Superfan and I was being honest by saying so. We pay enough for Sunday Ticket.

Also, while I had her on the phone I asked her if she knew the status of the HR-20. She told me that they launched a market test in Los Angeles today. According to her it should start trickling out in the coming weeks. I asked if there was a waiting list I could be put on and she said she could add me to an e-mail list specifically for updates on the HR-20.

Just sharing.

I just called yesterday to cancel Superfan. Ten minutes later I called and cancelled Sunday Ticket all together.

I was NOT offered anything, and they didn't even try talking me into keeping ST.

I would love to keep ST, but the price to pay for HD is ridiculous,,,especially after already paying $9.99 for the highdef channels and whatever ST is this year.

Congrats to everyone that got the free things, but I'll just keep my money and spend it on some more beer to watch my local feeds in High-def for free.
