The TV has about 4 hours of runtime. It changed channels on it's own today. I changed it back and it stayed. A few hours later it shut off!

Here We Gooooooooooooo! I really like this TV too!

Make sure no one is using another IR remote nearby (particularly another Sony remote).

Also check that none of the buttons are stuck down or not coming up all the way on the remote to the TV.

I read that on the Sony FAQ page.
I will say this, the buttons are SUPER sensitive to the touch!
You do not have to put much pressure at all on them to make it react.
I am wanting to lean this way due to it both changing channels and turning off.
I was no where near the remote though.
We will give her a fair chance before drawing a conclusion.

I REALLY, REALLY, like this TV. I have my fingers crossed.

If the buttons are that sensitive, normal expansion and contraction as a result of changes in temperature might be randomly activating them.

Take the batteries out of the remote for a while and see if the problem goes away--it's a lot easier to send a remote back than a TV :D

...or to just get a universal remote to replace it.

Yes with the remote in another room. I called Sony to document the behaivor and they took me through the reset. Ala - the unplug for 60 seconds, no timers on, and removing the remote batteries and kneading the buttons.
The TV will stay on another 48 hours or so with the remote in the room pointed at it.

I'll report.

Burn in on a modern tube CRT? I admit I am a newbee to this TV world and remember the old PC monitors burning in, but are you serious about this being a possibility with the 970?

I am 52 years old and have never seen a tube crt TV burnt in. Is there phosphorus in the 970's tube?

I have a Sony 19" trinitron apature grill monitor that has not been turned off in years. No burn in.

Anywat I use a channel that does not use constand icons and tickers.

I was just messing with you...as long as the image is not static, you should be fine. Good luck.:)

Its got a great picture and all, but after its been on for a half hour or so, the set begins to smell.

Its the smell of heated up plastic and electronics.. Its really ruining my experience.

Should I take it back to BB for a swap or will this smell go away after time? I've only had it for less then a week.

I hope this is not a sign of things to come. That thing was a PITA to get downstairs and into my cabinet..

Mine did not smell but it turned on and off as well as changed channels on it's own.

The best way to carry it is face the screen downward and wear gloves.
The more people the better.

I have the 32HFX72. When it plays it's picture quality is the best. But I've had my problems with it. Within the first 90 days I had to have the picture tube replaced by Toshiba. While I fell asleep with it on, it turned itself off and the red power light just kept flashing. I turned the power off as the tech person said to do, which I already did (manual doesn't address this problem), and turned it back on. Doing so resets the breakers inside. The second time I did this, sparkes exploded from inside. I turned it off and kept it off (wouldn't turn on anyway). Got it fixed, power unit and several transistors blew out. Had it for 3 days and it did the same thing. Especially if i try using the DVD - it turns itself off as soon as the DVD is turned on. Ok, so I don't use my DVD now, but after several days of being on, it still continues to turn itself off. I was thinking about replacing it with another Toshiba, the 34HFX85, but rethinking the whole situation over, I think I'll go to Sony's KDL-32S2000 or KD-36XS955. Does anybody have any comments on either of these?

I had that exact problem and lo and behold it's because of the IR remote that I used on my 34" XBR that turned on my 27" Sony Wega in another room.

Had me scratchin' my head for a while...lol
