Trash or Treasure - Old DTV equipment

04-25-2006, 09:59 AM
I just had the new upgrade installed (new antenna and 3 H-20 receivers). I was told that once the new satellite comes on line, my 2 previous H-10's and Samsung 360 HD receiver will obsolete along with the 3 lnb antenna. I want to either sell them or give them away but am being told that the trash is the best option. Comments please before I take some action...

Sounds like the words of an uninformed satellite installer.

There may come a time when the mpeg2 HD national feeds are shut off, but Directv is not going to stop transmitting their current mpeg2 SD channels. There are just too many people with SD receivers out there for that to happen.

I'd take that Samsung 360 off your hands if it has the OTA feature... it still makes a sparkling digital tuner.

My understanding is, old DirecTV gear will work, with the channels it always worked with. That goes for STB's and dishes.

BUT as they phase in new channels, you won't get 'em. For that stuff, including HD locals and new HD nationals, you'll need the new stuff.

I believe that in the long run, there will come a day when ONLY the new stuff will work. But that's like, 10 years away.

So keep your stuff. Unless, like, you want HD- locals in every room. Then buy all new stuff.

I sold my H-10 about 4 months ago on eBay for something like $125 plus S&H. That was better than throwing it out!

I did try selling an older RCA 32 bit SD receiver but didn't get any takers.

Good luck whatever you do!
