Digital audio out on KDS-R50XBR1

I have a question regarding the audio output on my new TV. I have a Scientific Atlanta 8300HD cable box, and when I connect HDMI to HDMI, I cannot get any digital audio output from the TV to the receiver. I know that the digital audio out works on the TV, because I get a signal when watching the direct cable input (coax). Is it possible to transmit digital audio out from the HDMI (video 6 or 7) inputs?

I am not sure about this but I believe most HDMI equiped HDTVs that have a optical output only send a signal if it is coming from the tuners built-into the TV. That would explain why you get sound from the coax (75 ohm) direct cable line.

I think it is a real oversight of these mfg to limit this output this way, but I am sure they did it for cost issues. Most people want to be able to send the sound via HDMI and also use their receiver if they choose, so it is easier for techno challenged members of the family to just listen to the tv's speakers.

The real solution because of this limited optical output is to get a Harmony remote so even the techno challenged can use the whole HT system easily. Even my 5 year old son can run my whole surround system with the Harmony remote.

I believe what PFC5 wrote is true. If the TV is receiving the audio via HDMI, the audio out of the TV will not output anything. I have a Toshiba and have the same issue. So I just run the digital audio output from my STB (Moto 6412), instead of from the TV, to my reciever and solves the problem. Now I have heard that some STB's have kind of the same issue. When using the HDMI out, the digital audio out is useless. But, that is not the case with my Moto STB. I hope this helps.

Thanks for the input. That is what I had already concluded, but just wanted to make sure I hadn't missed anything. I already run the digital audio out from the STB to the receiver, but was just trying to simplify settings for my wife and kids.

Yep - I ran into this and actually called Sony about it.

Even the person I spoke to was surprised that Sony only used the optical output for the tuner on the XBR1. What a shame.

The optical output is for air, coax, and cablecard users.

Some other brands such as mitsubishi do allow out of digital audio from the incoming HDMI but it is usually sent back out in 2.0 instead of 5.1

All TV's are only setup to have optical working with the built in tuner.Just run it out of your HD STB into reciever.

I have the same setup as you..and I had the same problem..Go into the settings of the 8300HD ( Hit settings button twice ) find the Audio: Digital out...Take it off HDMI and set it to dolby digital.. You will get the Digital signal to your reciver you are looking for..Then just put it back when your done.. so the wife and kids can watch it normally..;)
