Questions regarding DTV HD

04-18-2006, 03:56 PM
I've been reading several threads about DirecTV's HD service and I have some questions. First off, I live in the Cleveland area and according to DirecTV my local channels should be available in HD either this month or next. Right now I have the DTV SD TiVo going to my HDTV and I've been tossing around the idea of getting the HD TiVo so I started doing some research and found this site where I've been reading up. So, my questions are:

1) I read that I will need to get a new 5LNB dish in order to receive my local channels and that the current DTV HD TiVo will not be able to record them due to the MPEG4 format. Can the DTV HD Tivo record my local channels from my OTA HD antenna?

2) Is there any way to get some kind of a deal from DTV so I don't have to go drop $500 for the HD DVR plus however much a new dish is? I know there is that HD mail in rebate but that still doesn't shave much off the cost of the DVR.

3) What's this I keep reading on how DTV is now leasing equipment? Do you still buy the equipment and then they charge you an additional lease fee or what?

4) What's the deal with the new HD DVR that is coming out this year? If I were to get the HD TiVo box now, I'm going to assume that I'll have to pay for the new DVR when it comes out?

1) You can not record any of the HD locals via sat with the HR10-250. You can receive and record them via OTA.

2)I have heard of people getting them for as low as $299 after rebates and programing discounts. You will have to work the system to be able to get a good deal.

3) You pay the money upfront for the receiver and then just pay the $5 lease fee. When you pay the lease fee you won't have the $5 mirror fee. You also get the protection plan for free with the lease.

4) The current rumor is that it will be out this summer.

Hope this helps.

yeah, that helps thanks. One more question.. I've also heard that the HD TiVo is slower than the SD one.. is that true?

It is still on the older software. It is painfully slow.

The HR10-250 DVR is terribly slow ... like running WinXP on a PC-XT ... you jump a page in the guide and then just sit there and watch it fill in one channel row after another, very slowly...

Not trying to pick a fight but I record my HD locals 5 times a week on my HR10-250 via sat, did I miss something?

Unless you are in the NY or LA market you can not get your locals through D* on the HR10-250. All of the local HD's are sent in MPEG4 and the HR10-250 is MPEG2 only.

Well then I did miss something, I am in the NYC area thanks for clearing that up...

I just talked to the D* tech support about this:

1.) Rolling out in Denver area June 06 for HD local channels

2.) Currently there is only a box for channels not DVR capability

3.) The package through D* is 99$ for the HD Reciever + 5LMB Sat install....one time cost leasing, 350$ for box purchase does not include Sat upgrade.

4.) NO equipment available at this time for DVR recording function. TIVO won't work.

I'm looking at the OTA as a ecconomical choice since my HD10-250 is only a year old at the 900+ cost.
