This is a thread I created where we can discuss the new 2006 Toshiba 26" and 30" models: 26DF56 ($399.99), 30DF56 ($599.99), 26HF66 ($599.99), and 30HF66 ($799.99). Replacing the 26HF85, 30HF85, and 30HFX85, the new models now feature digital tuning (NTSC, ATSC and QAM tuners), and no HDTV tuner is needed. These new models offer 1080i display resolution, HDMI™ digital input (26HF66 and 30HF66 only), two sets of ColorStream® HD inputs, surround sound, front and rear A/V inputs, and universal remote control. These sets offer a space saving bottom speaker design in silver with black bezel. Own one of the new Toshibas and want to comment about it, post it here. Thinking of purchasing one, post it here. Enjoy...

Just wanted to point out that if those future prices indeed hold up, at the moment there are some other interesting Toshiba/Orion options available.

Instead of the 30DF56 for 600, right now the new 2006 Insignia 30" CRT (with the exact same tube as the Toshibas, however no HDMI input, but HD-capable through component) costs only 525 dollars. Also, right now the 30HF85 costs only 600 dollars at Best Buy too. Despite being lousy sets, if they cost the same as the future 30DF56 which is supposedly only SD, perhaps the current deals are good buys if you only consider them to be "SD" TVs at their price point.

Also, there is no guarantee the 30HF66 won't also be lousy. Who knows, the 30DF56 might even turn out to be a clone of the Insignia 30" (since the cost is similar). It will be very interesting to see how they turn out, I think.

It is possible that the SDTV, like the 30DF56, has a better picture than the HDTV, like the 30HF66. If you walk into Best Buy, I noticed that all of the Toshiba SD analog TVs on display look better than the HDs.

How can anyone ascertain that a "display" in BB or CC is good/bad or otherwise.

99% of the time they have been not set up properly and have bad cabling and improper feeds. 1/2 the time, it's not HD.

IMO... HD will always look better in a side to side comparison with a SD set. Even to a novice.

High feature blooming is evident in these sets and it doesn't care if there's a good signal or not. These sets are an embarassment to Toshiba. I think they can be tweaked but they are not even close to the quality HD tube sets I saw a few years ago.

Has anyone actually seen these displays in person? I am particularly interested in the SD displays. the 30" is in the same price bracket as Sanyo's 30" HDTV, but I'm in a position where i can see neither.... wondering how they stack up...
