Good receiver but I would go with the 2600 since it does upconversion. BTW how much were you going to spend

1600 is amazing.. it does upconversion also..

HDMI switching with certain boxes is an issue as it causes HDCP problems on the TV..

look up" the HD content of the display has been compromised" , you'll find everyones issues there.

yamaha just released some new lower end models recently so they might be sending out a newer 1600 model soon. you can check out this reciever at tweeter.

as far as sound goes i did a a/b with this reciever and the denon 4306 and the new denon 2807. my brother who knows nothing about audio and still thinks sony makes the best of everything quickly said the yamaha sounded better then both denon recievers. take that how you want to but i agreed with him. the 2600 also sounded great. i plan on upgrading my reciever soon and these yamahas crossed my mind a few times but better judgment told me to wait wait for the recievers that have hdaudio formats and hdradio to hit the market.

btw after yesterdays tests at tweeter my brother concluded sony sucks at making speakers and recievers now.

Have you checked out the Boston Acoustics amp/preamp combo onecall has on sell via techbargains...Under 1600 shipped and they are 2 sweet units. By far the best bang for the buck out there IMO.
Pretty much the same preamp as the Sherwood Newcastle P-965 or the top outlaw reciever. They also have the BA 7120 Reciever for <1K and it is exactly the same as the P-965. No upconversion via HDMI but it does upconvert video through component. Your tv or DVD can upconvert through HDMI anyway right ? It also has a USB port so you can listen to tunes through your Computer and update software.. Its really an amazing unit. I bought one and its the best thing since upturned nipples. Check out the review at home theater magazine.....peace

Best kept secret for custom A/V the SHERWOOD NEWCASTLE line. For the price and performance you get it's worth every penny. The reason your average installer does not carry Sherwood because it is not a well known name and they sell only off name recognition not off of experience. Plus the majority of Sherwood Newcastle sold are only by direct dealers who can meet their yearly goals. All other reciever are heavily sold thru distrubtion and online so installer have easy access to the product. Sherwood use to make 80% of all amp no they make about 35-40%.

Wow the 1600 does upconversion also. I though only the 2600 did upconversion and the 1600 only did switching. Unless they just released a upgraded model I am unaware of.
