YES, NESN, and SportsnetNY...baseball season is near

newhdD*boston

Will the regular season Yanks games be available in YES-HD on ch.90's for out of mkt people that have baseball package? Only reason I got a DLP and upgraded to H20/5LNB...

And 2 more questions...

Will NESN be available in HD anytime soon?

Anyone heard anything on D* deal with SportsnetNY? Being added to sports package? Mets in HD?

That's an interesting question. I have read contradicting statements from Directv CSR's regarding this very issue. #1

Here is the response I received from D*:

Thank you for writing concerning the MLB Extra Innings package. You may get some MLB games in high definition (HD) on channels 90-99. For example, when Fox Sports Net broadcasts a Seattle Mariners game in HD, we may carry the HD feed on channel 95.

As soon as we have determined the schedule for any of our sports subscriptions, we post it at DIRECTVSPORTS.com/schedules. If a schedule isn't posted, that means we haven't received it yet from the league(s).

I know that HD programming is important to you and DIRECTV is committed to offering the best possible HD experience to you. In recent months, we have launched the first two of four satellites that will allow us to greatly expand our HD local channel offerings.

The two new satellites have allowed us to begin offering HD local channels in several cities, with many more to come later this year. Because our satellite capacity is still limited, we intend to focus on getting HD feeds of ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC up in as many cities as possible. Next year, when the other two satellites become available, we will be able to begin providing even more channels (including CW, where available) in existing HD local markets, as well as adding new HD markets and more national HD programming.

Though currently we are not able to offer the Comcast SportsNet in HD, we continue to evaluate our available capacity and discuss the addition of HD channels with our program providers. In fact we just added TNT HD to the DIRECTV HD Package!

Thanks again for writing and stay tuned to our web site at DIRECTV.com/HD for the latest news about HD programming from DIRECTV.

I talked today to a D* CSR, who had no answers on HD telecasts and EI. I tried the guy's supervisor, who had more info. He said that like last year, EI will have some HD broadcasts - about the same as 2005. He said that viewers also will get their regional Fox HD baseball feeds, so for me that would mean the handful of Braves HD feeds on Fox Sports South.

I wrote D* about the same thing, and received this response...

Thanks for writing. We are sorry for any confusion regarding the MLB Extra Innings subscription. MLB Extra Innings does not include games in HD. You may get some MLB games in high definition (HD) on channels 90-99. Major League Baseball games are available regionally in select markets. These games are shown as our HD broadcast capacity allows. Please check your on-screen guide a few days prior to game day to see if a Major League Baseball game in HD is available in your area.

Please note that due to agreements between the RSNs and Major League Baseball, we are delivering HD feeds of games to customers who live within an RSNís home area only. Viewers outside of an RSNís home market who subscribe to MLB EXTRA INNINGS will receive the standard definition feeds of games in the MLB EXTRA INNINGS channels (734-749).

Thanks again for writing and stay tuned to DIRECTV.com for the latest news and information about our service.

Sincerely,

Lisa H

This old forum may help. I know last year YES had games on and it did not even show up on the guide a handful of times. I hate to sound so impatient but the technology has been out long enough I thought there would be more options by now myself...

thanks for the input...

1) About 6 months ago, I was told that most Yanks games are in HD on D* (approx. all home games and 26 away games this year) for in and out of market people...on ch. 91-99. So in Boston I better get them in HD.

2) NESN in HD is not available to D* customers yet, in mkt or out of mkt...

3) SportsnetNY will probably be added to D* the day before baseball starts...they will have to carry it, the Mets have 140 games on it this year.

D* CSR's have no info, we know much more than they do, and when we call them on it, they get all frustrated...so I guess we just have to wait and see...good luck to all!

Bruins games are not in HD on NESN. Unless something changes, the only option is to switch to comcast.

Has anyone received NESN HD OTA?

In the past two years there hasn't been any NESN HD OTA. Too bad, cause I am really looking for NESN HD. I sent an email to D a few day's ago and this was the response. Maybe if we get enough people to write in about it, we'll get it changed (I am being very optomistic)

Thanks for writing. I'm sorry, but we don't carry New England Sports Network (NESN) in HD right now. However, we often add programming based on customer requests, and I have forwarded your request to our programming department.

There is no such thing as NESN HD OTA. OTA stands for "over the air"... NESN is a cable/satellite station, thus OTA is not a term that makes sense for NESN.

I wish NESN was OTA and free, I'd move back to Mass.

NESN HD does exist, but not as a station (yet). Rather, they televise games in HD and throw it on another channel, but there is no such channel as NESN HD.

I feel like it's 1994 all over again... when people like me were complaining that we couldn't get Red Sox games in Ohio. Now, we are complaining we can't get them in HD (even though 155 are on SD!)...

Forget NESN and the Sox....more importantly, will Yankees games on YES HD be available on ch.'s 91-98 for out of NY market D* subs with MLB & HD package?

I'm sure George will figure out a way to buy his way into DirecTV.. he overspends for everything else.

Maybe he should get a real GM.... figure out how to spend money on a real pitching staff instead of geriatric stiffs and injury reclamation projects.

hahahahaha.

Or, maybe Johnny Damon will become ur ace pitcher, too. 52M for a CF with a weak arm who hits 10 HR's? WOW.

I thought this was a D* forum, not Yanks/Sox forum, I am not here to talk about the Yanks or Sox, only programming issues. I am still waiting for my questions to be answered.

To reiterate:
1) will YES HD be on ch.90's for out of mkt subs during games?
2) will NESN in HD ever be on D*?
3) will SportsnetNY make it to D* before next week's Mets opener?

I am looking for answers on #1 as well. No one knows as Directv has no clue either. Look at this post from another forum.

"Yankees in HD w/MLB EI out of market

I have been reading posts over the course of last year and from what I've gathered, YES HD was available for out of market subs who subscribed to hd pack/EI package from about August 2005. Should I feel pretty confident that us out of market subs should be able to see the Yankees in HD this year?

Posts: 4 Last year, most YES games broadcast as part of the EI package and in HD were broadcast out of market on channels 94 or 95. It was not every single EI/YES broadcast but it was probably about 90% once it was up and running.

It was sooner than August though. I'm thinking it started in May or maybe June. Confusion reigned early in the season when D* was showing the HD feed in the NY/NJ market but would not show it out of market. This of course made no sense since out of market subs were already receiving the SD feed via EI. D* claimed it was a MLB blackout issue. MLB claimed they were not blacking out the YES HD feeds out of market.

Finally after a lot of complaints, it was worked out.

Do not be surprised if it is screwed up again at the beginning of this season. Also, YES is broadcasting more Yankees games in HD this year as they have added some road games. Will that mean more EI Yankees games in HD?

The EI schedule page (last year anyway) is updated 1-2 weeks in advance with what games will be shown in HD.

Finally, I received the HD YES feed of EI games out of market (Boston) both with and without the HD package so at least last year subscription to the HD package was not necessary to view these games."

I have no clue about # 2 and 3. My guess that will come when MPEG 4 rolls out with the RSN's.

Thanks. I lived in the Tri-State area for 3 years and had come accustomed to getting my Yankee fix every day. You'd think after last years fiasco, they'd keep us happy with Yankees in HD.

Yeah, and you would not wanted the Red Sox to pay him that??

Out here on the left coast, they finally turned on the Hd games in 94-98 range. We still do not have FSN in HD. Thanks D* from being so far behind in HD channels. Cable may be looking better and better.

Yeah, and you would not wanted the Red Sox to pay him that??

Compared to what we paid Crisp? Heck no. Same numbers, check them out. Had we not gotten Crisp, maybe I'd say yeah... but I'm very happy it worked out the way it did.

Anyway, DTV may or may not show the Yankees. I got them a few times last year, but I don't think they are willing to guarantee anything.

For some odd reason though, I got a lot of Mariners HD games last year.

Strange.

Honestly, the Red Sox are on enough on ESPN HD and ESPN2 HD as well as Fox HD during the year that I'm fine. I realize it's a long way until all the sports are in HD for all teams... I'm just happy with getting the games, period at this point.

Here's where Dish Network can become a player. DTV has the NFL, and it hurts DISH.

If Dish went out and got the two largest baseball teams and followings, the Yankees and Red Sox, and orchestrated YES and NESN HD, then they'd grab a whole bunch of summer subscribers.

Of course, I'd bolt back to DTV for NFL, but strictly in terms of business, Dish would not be stupid for researching that.

Fox Sat games were not in HD last year. Do you know that they will be this year? Personally I don't think Fox has got it in them, not with their Nascar  races.

:( Well the schedlue has been updated to include channel assignments, but none of the games have any HD channel listings. Not a good sign that HD games will be a regular event this year. It looks like we're going to see the same set up as last year.

I'll hope to be wrong, but it doesn't look good right now.

There is still hope for HD with the Yankees. First HD tlecast for them is April 11.
