Directv needs HD Tuner?

Im completely new to the whole HD thing and also getting DTV for the first time next week. I bought a Sammy 56" DLP with built in HDtuner and cablecard but DTV tells me I still have to purchase theirs for 99. Just wanted to make sure this is the norm before I accept. Also is Directv decent? Im doin a qwest package deal to save a few coin. The local cable company is junk. THX

Correct. Your TV can tune QAM/ATSC signals but not DSS signals.

This is not a tuner but a sat receiver.

Depending on your proximity to the locals,a indoor antenna will work fine. One of my tvs have a indoor antenna hooked up and I pull in channels at 90% or better. My new tv has new built in tuner,I hooked up a coaxial cable and it has signal strength in the 50's.You can pick up one at bb or cc to see.Go to www.antenaweb.org
to check your cordinates to your locals.
