Newbie question

(Old) newbie in Knoxville, TN. I apologize if I don't follow protocols quite right (I'm new to chat rooms).

Researching D* HD. After researching via D* cust. svc. and local retailer and getting conflicting info, I find this site and you guys. Woo - Hoo  ! Unbiased input!!!

I've used D* 5+ years. Currently have 2 receivers, 1 single, 1 double with TIVO service (Philips DSR704); 2 LNB dish; Hitachi 46F10 HD ready (no tuner) proj. TV (receives all tuned HD, displays 1080i and 540p); Onkyo TX-DS797 for audio (cable directly to TV from D* and DVD).

Was about to buy the HR10-250, called D*. After talking to D* Cust. Svc., had a few additional questions, called again and next guy gave me a lot of DIFFERENT info  . Second guy said, HD locals coming to Knoxville in April, OTA will be a "who knows until you set it up" thing (I'm about 9 miles from all local towers); local retailer (not far from my house) says OTA no problem, can take equipment back if I don't like it (D* says once it's installed, it's mine). Can't use outside antenna, but attic mount easily accessable to main TV. Would also like to replace my single SD receiver with the double/TIVO one I currently use.

My inclination was to just wait and see what happens, but several posts here seem to indicate I might be better off getting the 250 and then seeing what D* offers later.

I'd appreciate any thoughts on this. Thanks

Personally, I would keep what you have, get a OTA antenna set up going for the local HD (don't have to pay D* for locals that way).

and wait and see what shakes out with the MPEG 4 DVR when it comes out in the next 3 months or so.

Thanks, Jimbo. Thoughts on the stand alone HD tuner? I've looked at some of the major retailers and I can get a Samsung for about 250. A Terk HDTVi looked like it might be a good choice for an indoor OTA antenna.

Hmmm,
Thats a tough call, seeing you are leaning to waiting on the D* receiver, (I would too), See if you can pick up one real cheap somwhere, maybe closeout CC or something like that, when you do get the D* stuff it will have a HD tuner built into it, (but NO analog anymore). so no need to spend big on it.

If you are going to go with an indoor antenna, try the Zenith Silver Sensor, I think it is called, very good and only, maybe like $ 30 bucks
Very highly regarded in the HD forums.

Tom,

I own the TERK, and live 20 miles from the towers, and it works great!!

Word of advice on the OTA tuner... go to ebay.. u'll save 2 hundred bucks. Do a search on "hd receivers". An H10, or even a Voom will work.

Even if u don't sub on that box, it just needs a "signal" to activate, and when u plug in ur antenna, it will find the locals. Then, just unplug the sat in and put it back in ur normal dtv box, and boom.... a real inexpensive OTA tuner.

Good advice Tom,
I do however believe that he would need to make sure that the D* receiver was previously activated, in order for the OTA portion to work. When you open a new unit, you cannot get to the OTA menus till it finds a D* signal, a used unit would allow him access right from the start

Correct... I was saying he could bypass that by plugging in his dtv line to get a "fake signal", which will take him through setup, then unplug and it should work.....that's how I did mine.

Thanks for all the great advice. I'll explore everything you've suggested.

By the way, the last rep at D* I talked to said they were having problems with the 5 LNB dish communicating with the new HD/DVR unit. Is this old info, or would be helpful to the board?
