34" or 30" decisions....

Here's what I'm thinking.

Saw a 34" Sony at Best Buy today for about $1150
Saw a 30" Samsung for about $850 but it has an HD tuner

In the room it's going in, I'll be seated about 8ft away tops. It's primarily for gaming, but having a tuner built in gives me some options for over the air broadcasts.

I can't really spend much more than the Sony. I prefer the bigger screen, but like I mentioned, I also like the option of a built in tuner.

Thoughts? Are there good 34" tubes with tuners in my price range?

Without the model numbers it would be hard to give to strong an opinion. That being said, I have a Samsung 30 inch 16x9 format direct view crt and have been most pleased with the set. In not too many months I will have had it for 4 years. Only drawback is they are heavy.

Here's the Samsung:

Here's the Sony:

I already have a Philips 34" hd crt in another room, so I'm familiar with these types of sets.

I'm just torn between a slightly bigger screen for $300 more, or a built in hd tuner.

I found a Sony KD30XS955 for 899.99 at Electronic Express (http://www.electronicexpress.com/index) They are in Nashville, TN. They had 20 in stock when I ordered mine about 2 weeks ago.

This model has been discontinued, and you may not find one locally. I had to pay shipping of 130.00 but it was still worth it. It has Sony's best picture tube AND a built in tuner. The equivalent Sony in a 34" is 1500.00. The PQ of this set is just stunning. You will not find a better picture for 900.00, period. In my view, the smaller size is offset by the killer picture, because the smaller picture "views larger" than it really is, because it is so clear. Just my opinion on that.

Is 130.00 shipping worth having the best picture you can get in ANY set under 3000.00???

It was for me. ;)

Can I buy an OTA tuner to hook up to the Sony that doesn't have a built in tuner? What does something like that run?

Disregard that...after doing some searching here and on Amazon, I found the answers to the tuner question. Still trying to decide on the Samsung 30" with tuner for $300 less than the Sony 34" without tuner....

Personally if budget and space were not an issue, I'd go for the 34" model. As you already noted, there are solutions for the lack of a tuner. I would prefer to be gaming on the larger screen. :)

I went with the Sony!

Of course, since this thing is so damn heavy, I have to wait for a buddy to come over and help me move this beast tomorrow to set up. :(
