Could it possibly be that they are using OTA for local HD?

No, SHOSHOSHO meant maybe your friends were picking them up from an over the air antenna.

Also, are your friends using D* or cable ?
Maybe your cable company has them in HD already...

Local into Local reception depends on which county you live in. If your friends live in a different TV market beacuse they're in a different county than you, you can't draw any conclusions about local network availability.

If you are willing to share the zip code of you and your friends the answer could be specific to your location.

You did not say what locals you are trying to get, but looking at your zip, I would guess it's rochester, and being only 7-10 miles from the towers , you should probably be able to get them with a coat hanger, just kidding, an indoor antenna should work for you.

Why pay D* forever and only get the major 4 networks when you can use an antenna and get all your locals, including PBS and whatever other locals you have.

Jimbo Amen, put up an antenna, looks like all Rochester stations are in the UHF, try a Zenith silver sensor, hook it up to the digital tuner. Scan for digital channels and enjoy.

HD reception in zip code 14612 is over the air with an antenna.

The D* HD box will decode over the air signals in HD simply by plugging an antenna in the back of the receiver. In your location I'd suggest a small UHF-only antenna mounted in the attic. The Radio Shack U-75R is one choice.
