What do I need to get started?

1st post, but Ive been reading enough to get thoroughly confused! I am a D* sub, with the samsung dvr. TV is a toshiba 50H12. I checked the antennea site, and im within 12-13 miles of 3 local channels. How can I go about pulling ota hd? As far as I can tell the tv is hd ready, the d* receiver has the antennea in port, and I hope I can use an inside antennea. Can I just pick up an antennea (how do you know what one to use? It seems like all 3 local hd's show a different color) and plug it into the receiver?
Ideally Id like the hd package, but im not willing to give up the tivo, nor am I willing to pay the $200-300 price for a hd-tivo. Maybe if the ota is that impressive, id consider it, but I don't want to commit too much right now.
Am I going about this right?

Being only 10-12 miles away, you can try an indoor antenna, worst case senario, it doesn't work and you take it back.
The colors on the antennas designate the distance the antenna will go.

I would try the antenna route 1st, you can pick one up cheap. If indoor does not work , go to an OTA antenna. the OTA signal will be better in the long run anyways.
If you like what you see and want more, then look into the D* HD package

All your HD channels will be on .1 or .2 ect. so channel 13 would be 13.1 .1 designates HD vs analog signal
