HD or not HD? That is my question

I have standard Dish network Satellite (Chicago area). I was in the market for a larger flat panel TV, and ended up buying a Hitachi 42" HD plasma. I originally was looking at "EDTV" sets, wanting to keep costs down and not really being a HD-phile.

So I hook the new unit up, using S-video from the reciever to the TV (no Composite? - B,G,Y - connections on the sat receiver.

Sadly, the picture quality sucks. I have checked into HD through DN, but don't want to spring for an HD DVR on top of the additional HD monthly fee and on top of the $$ spent for the Hitachi. As I said, I am not a HD fanatic (seen it, and it is nice, but I'm not gaga over it)

So, my question is, will a 42" ED Plasma look better with standard DN service than the poor quality I get now on an HD set with standard DN?

Do I hook up my old 36" CRT and just forget the whole thing?

Do I have to bite the bullet and upgrade satellite dish, reciever/DVR, add something else to get my local channels to look decent?

TIA
Greg

If HD doesn't make you "gaga", then get the EDTV or CRT.
Have you ever watched 24, CSI, Lost, MNF, ANY Sports in HD???
Big Time GAGA dude! :D

Good Luck finding an ED Forum to yuk it up!

Using the S-video cable may help a bit, but if your using an older E* receiver, it's not going to help much.

You can probably call E* up right now and get an 811 for nothing and get the basic of HD, so it's not going to break you.

Thanks Dave. My brother has HD on an Aquas LCD and I agree the resolution is great. But I don't watch it that much, and had an old Radio Shack antenna on my roof with REALLY lousy reception, until my wife bought me DN for my BDay (quite a woman !).

Anyway, I kinda got talked into the HD TV at Sears this weekend, as I reas originally looking for an EDTV. Not realizing that the PQ would look soo poor with my DN, I took it.

I want to take the HD back, but only if an EDTV set would look "normal" (at least as good as old CRT) with my DN service.

Any idea how ED works on DN?

PS: this is a great forum. I have learned alot about HD reading through these posts. Wish I would have read it BEFORE I bought my set ;-(

if you are not going to watch HD then take the new set back.

Good chance that you are not going to get a better pic then your crt will have. Most providers broadcasts are really not made for tvs larger then 36"

Thanks for the advice. Do you know if a 42" EDTV will have the same issues with DN as the 42" HDTV?

( I am not sure Sears will take this unit back without a restocking fee), but if I offer to try the EDTV, maybe I can work a deal.

Ok just went through all of this for my wife. We have a 522 from Dish. We are using the S-Video out of the 522 into the new TV.

We first got a 32" Samsung plasma and the picture was great. Only problem was it did not have the ATSC tuner in it, and that was something I really wanted for over the air HD. So I took that back and got a 42" DLP from Samsung for the same price. This TV looked really bad on SD the HD picture was OK. After a week I took that back and got a 42" Sony KDF-E42A10. This has a good picture on the SD. Even with the picture streched to fill the screen it looks pretty good. HD is great as well.

Does anyone have any idea if an Enhanced Def 42" Plasma would look ok in SD from Dishnetwork standard service?

If I thought it would as good as my old 36" CRT, I would downgrade the set.

If it still will have the ghosts & shadows like the new HD set I bought, then I guess I will have to upgrade to DN HD.

Any thoughts?

Greg,

I have a Maxent 42" Plasma. It is awesome. It is an EDTV. SD looks good if you use the S-video cable. HD looks awesome on this EDTV. So if you don't want to have HD from DN that is fine. You will be happy with the results. The other that you need to know is that at the moment DVD are 480P which is what the EDTV is. DVD look awesome on the EDTV. I hooked it up with component video. NIce crisp picture. So if you have a lot of DVD and rent movies that way the 42" Plasma EDTV will be fine. It all comes down to your personal preference.

OK. Thanks for the insight.

For the record, the sales manager at Sears swears that the HD TV will work fine with standard DN. Claims that is what they use in the store.

I would agree with him. Just remember when you get a big screen TV use need to sit at least 3 times the height of the tv away from the tv to enjoy the picture and TV.
