Subwoofer Popping

I have a Cambridge 10S powered subwoofer and every once in a while it will make a loud pop, like it would if you connected the cable with the power on. It will do it several times an hour when the receiver is on and even now and then with the receiver off. Cambridge claims it is probably the amplifier going, but said to let it die before sending it back. (Of course it just went out of warranty, but they claim it will only be $50 to either replace the amp or will provide a totally new subwoofer.) Does their explanation sound correct? I'm hoping it won't do any damage to any of my other components as the amp spikes. Just wanted to get thoughts from you pro's.

obviosly anything is possible but 99.99997(6N) you will not get any power sent to your components.

that's the deal. it is off and on you don't notice it until it "pops". Send it back now and say it went anyway.
