receiver with digital out

I have a digital out on my TV and thought I could buy an optical cable and run it from there to my receiver and replace the red and white av's I have going into it. Well low and behold I buy the cable and notice that the receiver has an optical out instead of an optical in. Two outs cannot be connected together and work, right? What's the point of putting an optical out on a receiver?

Your use of the optical out would be for the internal digital tuner inside your TV. Your receiver should have a digital in for your surround sound and the digital out would allow you to also listen to dolby digital audio through your TV.
