New Panny DLP - Need Help w/Minor Issues

Just purchased a Panasonic PT-56DLX75 DLP TV. I also have a progressive scan Toshiba SD-K741SU DVD player connected to the TV via component cables.

Picture looks great, yet I'm seeing a few issues (nothing critical):

1. Playing the Star Wars Episode III and The Incredibles DVD, I'm still seeing the letterbox format. I configured my DVD player to set the display as "16:9 Widescreen", yet I'm still seeing the black bars on the top and bottom of the screen.

2. ESPNews. The ticker seems to cut off on the left and right edges of the screen. Is this normal for this channel?

Any help would be great!

If the movie is a 1.78:1 (16/9=1.7777778)(Anamorphic), then it will fill the screen. If it is 2.35:1 (Cinescope, I think) then it will have small bars. Some movies (more it seems) are shot in a wider aspect then 16:9, that number is good compromise. Personally I prefer 1.78, as it makes the picture look bigger. Some try to zoom to remove the bars, I leave them be and preserve the image. I suppose it could hurt a RP CRT over time (persistant black bars), one more reason to buy a micro display!

look on the back of the dvd and it will give you the aspect. Anything over 1.78 is considered anamorphic and will be letter boxed even on your widescreen. Hollywood's widesrceen setting are different than televisions.

try the aspect modes on your tv and make sure its not zoomed in and also check your box settings and make sure thay are not set to be zoomed in. Sometimes the broadcasts are set to where they will go off the screen.
