I am going to get a 16:9 tv for our living room in the 32" to 42" range.

Should I go with a Plasma or an LCD?

Everywhere I look on the internet has conflicting information and pros and cons of each one.

Also, what do you think about the models made by Phillips?

Thanks very much in advance for any info and help.

Regards,
-Ward

Go to the showrooms and compare for yourself. The latest generation of each type are very good. By the way, you'd be better off posting this in the flat panel forum rather than D*.

-WardBased on your general question, Borromini gave you the best answer you can get. If you can be a little more specific about usage (TV, DVD, gaming) area (lighting, distance) source (cable, sat, off-air) and most importantly BUDGET (min, avg, max) then you might be able to narrow your choices a little. Either way, the most important thing is to do your research and in the end trust your eyes. The numbers, statistics, acronyms, and opinions will make your head spin, but don't be afraid to take your time. Be leery of any "pushy" sales people. If you buy at a Brick & Mortar store, select a reputable one that offers at least a 30 day full refund policy. Hopefully you won't need it, but it's nice to have in case something goes wrong.

As for Philips, I used to work at a division of theirs until they sold us. All I can say is that the only Philips products I have in my home are a couple of light bulbs and a $10 clock/radio. (If you get my drift... ;) )

Good luck, and welcome to the HD revolution! :hithere:

If you have room for one, and you are only looking for 32"-42" sized TV, a traditional CRT will give you the best picture for the best price. The only drawback is the size and weight of the CRT cabinet.

If you want to go towards the top end of that range, though, (above 37") you will probably have to get a projector, plasma, LCD, or other technology other than CRT. Personally, I'm not big on flat panels. I've never seen one that makes me want to give up a CRT or projector. But that's just personal preference. Go to a showroom and see for yourself. Ask to see several different broadcasts, make sure it includes HD broadcasts, make sure you are watching the TVs from the proper viewing angle and distance, and keep in mind that the TVs on the showroom floor may not be tuned in correctly for the best color, brightness, etc. If you narrow it down to a few models, read the reviews online. They should help you avoid any lemons.

As for Phillips, I don't trust them. I have had several Tivo units in my house, from several different manufacturers, and the Phillips is the only one that has ever given me any trouble. But that may just be one bad experience. I also worry that they are often consistently cheaper than everyone else on comparable models. That could be a bad sign. Do your research and be sure of the Phillips you are looking at before buying.

Two 'L' Phillips are the Milk of Magnesia people, it's one 'L' Philips that makes electronics... they're a Dutch company...

In these smaller sizes, I'd go LCD instead of plasma since the small plasmas aren't up to full HD res, while the LCDs are.

I used to work for them until they sold me to a German group. Went from bad to worse.....

Check out the Sony KDL-V40XBR1, an excellent 40" flat panel LCD.
