I first want to say after 1 year with my XBR I love it! But, at night in dark scene's there is a green hue or haze in the middle of my screen. Called Sony and the place I bought it (I do have 5 year warranty) and neither one of them has a clue. I have not let them touch it yet because I dont want to be without it for a couple of weeks while its being looked at. Has anyone seen or heard of this, and should I just insist on a replacement if they are still at a lose if they can't fix.

Sony & JVC LCOS color variation explanation

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have been reading in the Hi Def Forum and the AVS Forum of problems people are having with Sony and JVC LCOS machines. In particular there are complaints of blue hue, patches, blotches, green blobs, etc. These effects are mostly visible with a screen that is completely one color.

As a former semiconductor engineer, I decided to ask one of my associates who is currently designing LCOS chips for the HDTV industry. The following is his response. I hope this clears up the issue.

“LCOS has a number of technical challenges to overcome. LCOS devices are very sensitive to cell gap, which typically is two to three microns. Since visible light wavelength is about half a micron, a minor variation in cell gap will affect the reflected light intensity significantly and hence the color in a system with 3 panels. Both JVC and Sony have uniformity compensation hardware built into their system, but they can never do a perfect job. It is not that noticeable during normal video, but in full white, full dark, uniform grey and gradient displays, some of the artifacts can really stand out.”

well this tv does not have LcOS. It is the later generation before the 3 lcd panels. Its a year old now. Any idea on the older models before the SXRD's came out?

Its a regular 3 lcd panel projection. All sony grand wega models have had it they just now started using it as a marketing ploy. As far as your green spot goes you probably have a defective lcd panel. Call whoever your warranty is under and have them check it out.
