HDTV formats include 1280 x 720p, 1920 x 1080i, and 1920 x 1080p. Progressive displays (720p or 1080p) are much better for gameboxes & PC use. CRTs are interlaced. LCD, DLP, Plasma are progressive.

You should buy a widescreen, preferably with a digital tuner, since analog will be turned off in 3 years. You can find 30" LCDs for $900, 26" for $700.

A sub 500 dollar tv can be found at walmart. The have a 28-30" widescreen (because that is how HD is broadcast\as well as DVDs) for that price or less. Dont get a standard Def tv because you will need all the cool plugs that come with HD when it becomes the standard in a couple years. Dont get one that says HD readym get one that has the tuner so you can plug an antenna on it and see some local NFL games in High definition..then you will know the difference. Enjoy.

Circuit City has the Panny 26" HD CRT with 1080i native resolution for $399 currently. Very nice TV to start with and it's widescreen.
