I just picked up a Zenith (LG) 50" Plasma and my 5 year old DVD player looks really bad. Its hooked up with Audio/ S-Video cable. Should I get one of the HDMI output players? I would think any new progressive scan players would be an upgrade. Should I use the HDMI port or go with component cables? Its all new to me so I don't have a clue! Thanks

you could go for one that upconverts through hdmi. but most people who do get one find its only slightly better then a good progressive scan dvd player. i own a sony dvp-ns775 and the picture is great. if you get a player that has component connections it will be a huge upgrade from s video. here is a link to some good dvd players. if you give us a price range maybe we can help you narrow the field a bit.

Before spending money on a new player, get a good quality component-video cable and try it with your current player. You should see an improvement in the picture quality. If you still get a bad picture you can buy a new progressive scan player and use the component cable with it. You can get a good quality progressive scan player (eg. Sony, Panasonic) for less than $100 US. I wouldn't even bother with the more expensive upconverting players with HDMI outputs.
