My DVR Dilemma

11-27-2005, 12:23 PM
A year ago I decided to get a Dish Network DVR for my living room.Sounds great, right? Dish sent me the dvr by UPS and also
they set up a technician appointment to install it for me.
To almost make a long story short-after sending one dvr back to Dish because it would'nt even turn on..and then setting up another
tech appointment and having another dvr sent...it turned on,but would only stay on one channel. The tech was confused by this,as I was too. So,I sent that DVR back to Dish too ! They were going to send me a third replacement DVR..but I had enough and decided to be refunded over $600 at the time.
First of all, don't they TEST their products before sending them out ?!!!
Second of all, from what I've been told by Dish network..all future receivers will have DVR's in them.Because DVR's are so popular with DN customers.Personally ,I don't need a DVR..there's always something I want to watch on Satelite.
I wonder if their dvr's have improved in a years time.Maybe I should get one again.I have an 811 receiver. And my other family member's have 510 dvr's and mom has a 301 receiver.
I would love to have a dvr,but it seems that the DN techs and the quality of their equipment sucks. They don't seem to know what they're doing.

Sounds like you might have been getting the 921 sent to you. If that is the case that unit was a POS.

Yes,it was the 921 Dvr. What did you mean by Pos. ? Did you mean possibly?
Tech at DN on the phone said they had alot of problems with the 921.LOL..No Kidding !

The 921 may be a tricky install if you have the DPP44 switch. It requires the use of a DP separator in order to get it to pass the switch test. If the tech didn't know that he should have call dish technical support. Also with all dual tuner DVRs both tuner need to be connected.
If the only channel you got was chan 101 then that's normal until the smart card has been configured and latest software update are loaded and rebooted on the hard driive.
DVRs are really great because you can watch two or more programs at once and for the 921 and 942 record full HD resolution.

I've had 921 for a year...bought via internet not from DN. The first one had a display problem in SD (a line of distortion in the middle of the picture). I got it replaced quickly, and have had the second one since. Love the ability to record HD!

About 6 mos ago, something happened and lost all recorded programs...was pretty PO'd, but DN rep said OTA recording was a problem, and that a software upgrade would fix. They have updated the software...and OTA works great. I've read alot about problems, but have had those 2 and no others...also DN has dedicated CSR's for 921 (all HD STB?) customers.

It was around $1k until it "dropped" to about $550 last November when I picked it up. The 921 and OTA are my only experience with HD, but it has been great! Watching recorded movies in HD w/Dolby Digital is great...and the DVR capabilities with HD are great...doubt that referee's call? Replay it yourself in slow-mo/fram-by-frame.
