I have a Harmon Kardon 310 receiver. I went and bought digital optical cables. I hooked it up to my cable box and receiver but nothing happened. The reciever skips over the digital when I am scrolling through 5channel, theater, hall1, and the various other setups. What am I doing wrong?

It may be your optical audio output needs to be enabled in your receiver. Check to see if you can see a light on the HK end of the cable.

The HK end lights up, however the one that plugs into the cable box doesnt? is that the problem?

No the output would be from your cable box. The cable box emits the light and the HK receives it.

Some surround receivers have assignable inputs meaning you may have several digital audio inputs of a mixture of optical and coax. On these receivers any digital input can be assigned to any video input so that video input 1 may be used with optical input 2 and so forth. HK being a high end has this ability. Check your manual somewhere about page 19 and the onscreen menus and see how to set up your audio inputs.

Question/Help: I have all my devices hooked into my TV first (HDMI & component) and the optical output to my receiver. The problem I have is too much of the center dialog is coming thru the whole system. Anyone else experience this, or have any ideas how to remedy?

Your TV passes the digital audio from your HDMI inputs out the digital audio output? Although most would agree this is how it SHOULD work, it's very rare... most TVs only output digital from their own internal tuner & don't pass thru...

How about turning the center channel volume down on the receiver?

Good point. I was taking it for granted he had all levels calibrated. Assume nothing.
