So here's my situation.

I got about $2k to spend on the TV.
I will be watching a boat load of DVDs.
I will be watching lots of HDTV television programming.
I will be playing lots of XBox 360 and PS3.

All things considering - don't Projection TVs still offer the best quality of picture for HDTV?

It seems the size and weight of current projection sets are fine for my room - so - is projection the way to go for my needs? And are Sony or Panasonic the two brands I should be considering?

I've been researching and seen these sets :

Sony KP-57WS520 57"
Toshiba 57HC85 57"

For PQ, especially good color & blacks, most would probably say direct view CRT and Plasma have the best. But CRT is only small & interlaced, and big HD plasmas are expensive.

If you mean CRT based RPTV, they are still interlaced and can suffer burn in. Microdisplay based RPTVs, DLP - LCD - etc, are progressive & burn proof.

For Gamebox & PC use, a progressive scan 720p/60 or 1080p/60 display is highly recommended. They're a bit more expensive than the CRT based RPTVs, but you can get something around 45" for your budget.

THanks for the response ... yup ... I just might add another grand to my budget and get the Samsung 1080p DLP.

I would recommend looking at the Toshiba 1080p DLP and the SONY RP LCD 1080p SXRD as well. You could toss in the JVC LCOS 1080p that is coming out.
