This has been covered numerous tiimes.

Service plans will either cover the lamps or not.

If they don't, they should be cheaper (about half, in many cases).

Sony has plans on their sonystyle website. They are underwritten by an ins. company (like all the rest). They do not cover lamps, and are very reasonable in price.

Average price for plan that covers lamps is about 100 bucks a year. Maximum years is usually 4 or 5.

Most plans can be cancelled with a pro-rated refund.

The better plans will replace your display with a new one after 3 repairs (not lamp replacements).

Costco has a 'return anytime' policy for members on most any purchase. Limited to 6 mos. for most computer products.

Most premium credit cards (Visa, MC, AE, etc.) have 'warranty extensions' from 1 to 3 years, depending on the card you use for purchase.

Most electronics manufacturers do not offer extensions on their factory warranties, like they used to.

Being a newer technology, many feel compelled to buy extensions. I would not buy one I could not cancel down the road.- OR- Get a free return from Costco. It may be a while before Costco carries this particular display, but in time prices will drop anyway.

Or get free coverage from your CC company.
