1970 SuperBird Trivia

http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/9575/70superbird38.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/204/70superbird38.jpg/)

All SuperBirds were required to have vinyl tops (black) so as to avoid the high cost of finish work to the roof area around the rear window conversion area before paint could be applied. All cars came equipped with Boar Grain vinyl roofs. The rear window was never tinted, even if the rest of the glass in the car was.

The only options available on a SuperBird were a choice between a 440+6 and a 426 Hemi over the standard 440 4bbl engine, a bucket seat interior in black and white over the standard bench seat, and a Torqueflite automatic transmission over the standard 4-speed. Daytonas, on the other hand, could be loaded with any choice of Charger R/T options.

Road Runner equipment not available when the A13 SuperBird package was ordered were: 14 in. Deluxe Wheel Covers, 14 in. Wire Wheel Covers, Air Conditioning, Air Grabber Hood, All Windows - Clear, Automatic Speed Control, Axle Packages (A31, A32 and A34), Basic Group, Body Sill Mouldings, 11 in. Heavy Duty Brakes, Headlight Delay, Hood Performance Paint Treatment, Light Package, Rear Speaker, Road Runner Dust Trail Stripe, Trailer Towing Package and Woodgrain Instrument Panel.

Power steering, front power disc brakes and hood pins were required factory equipment on all SuperBirds.

Chrysler had to buy back every SuperBird sold in the state of Maryland (due to a front bumper requirement) and they were shipped and resold in Florida

There is almost 36 feet of vacuum hose in the headlight system of a winged car.

Like the Charger Daytona, the Superbird used stainless steel A Pillar covers which were to strengthen that area of the car and act as air dams for the race cars. Their size and angle were different:

http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/8541/1970plymouthsuperbird44.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/141/1970plymouthsuperbird44.jpg/)http://img716.imageshack.us/img716/7905/1969dodgechargerdaytona.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/716/1969dodgechargerdaytona.jpg/)

Only seven colors were available on the SuperBird: Alpine White, Lemon Twist Yellow, Limelight Green, Blue Fire Metallic, Petty Blue, Tor-Red and Vitamin C Orange. A couple of SuperBirds, probably specially ordered by Chrysler insiders, left the assembly line with Burnt Orange Metallic paint.

http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/1408/fk5atotn.png (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/221/fk5atotn.png/)

This problem car got painted FK5; that's Burnt Orange Metallic. The car went as normal through the baking oven, had it's vinyl roof installed, and had quite a few of its mechanical parts installed. Someone caught the paint error on the line in the Trim Shop. The painters had read the fender tag incorrectly, or the Production Scheduling people coded its color incorrectly, or an "illegally-ordered" color slipped through from a dealer's order.

By now the car was much too far assembled to pull it off the Trim Line, re-insert if on the Paint Line, scuff sand its new paint, reshoot it a correct color, and run it through the high heat of the baking oven. And, the car was already built in the Metal Shop as a SuperBird, so it could not easily be converted to a regular Road Runner, which did allow Burnt Orange Metallic paint. It was finally decided by Product Planning to finish building the car as a SuperBird, and send the car to Clairpointe as usual, along with a can of orange paint, and a note explaining the problem! (If the broadcast sheet and fender tag paint codes did not match the FK5 color, this car received re-issued identification). Researchers have so far found three SuperBirds painted the "impossible" FK5! http://wwnboa.org/patik.htm

The rear quarter panel decal "Plymouth" was normally white on blue and red cars, while black decals were found on green, orange, white and yellow cars.

Almost all of the Daytonas and SuperBirds were wrecked on the new car prep line because the cars were too long for the conveyor line. At the end of the line, the conveyor would disconnect and that car would stop while the following car rear-ended it! Chrysler replaced most of the nosecones with new pieces, and some lead work was allowed.

The SuperBird, like the Charger Daytona, was delivered with two different jacks in the trunk; a scissor jack for the front of the car and a standard bumper jack (seen under the spare tire) for the rear. You can also see the Rear Wing Braces.

http://img535.imageshack.us/img535/3181/superbirdtrunkinterior.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/535/superbirdtrunkinterior.jpg/)

Because the SuperBirds did not sell well, several dealerships converted their SuperBirds back to Road Runners by removing the wings and nosecones and installing 1970 Road Runner front ends. The tell-tale sign of one of these dealer conversions is the smaller SuperBird rear window and window plug left intact.

Selling SuperBirds proved to be of little difficulty for performance-wise dealers, however, First Avenue Plymouth, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, sold fifteen, more than any other dealer.

Contrary to popular myth, the front fender scoops on Daytonas and SuperBirds are to allow tire clearance while cornering, not to supply cooling to the brakes.

http://img812.imageshack.us/img812/5968/sbej.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/812/sbej.jpg/)

The front fenders and hood were modified 1970 Coronet pieces. The front fender scoops were made of injected plastic and mounted via five studs. There were two distinct shapes to the scoops - a flat type and a much more rounded one. A car may have come from the factory with two of the same style or one of each.

The nose was made of steel; the headlight buckets of fiberglass. The wing was aluminum, and the pitch of the horizontal portion was adjustable. The nose and wing were painted with lacquer; the remainder of the body was painted with acrylic enamel.

http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/1657/nose4c.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/687/nose4c.jpg/)

http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/7295/sbha.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/97/sbha.jpg/)

Most SuperBirds came with chrome exhaust tips. A few cars, and all California cars, came with down-turned exhaust pipes in the rear.

http://img406.imageshack.us/img406/5619/showfield7ba.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/406/showfield7ba.jpg/)

Cal Gas, an LP gas distributor in Memphis, TN gave their salesmen four propane gas powered SuperBirds to use in their travels across the country as a promotion gimmick. The cars each had two 45 gallon tanks mounted in the trunks and "Cal Gas Propane Powered" decals for advertising. The cars were expected to tick off 400,000 - 500,000 miles before retirement.

The rear wing on the production based cars did little other than turn heads. It was given this height so that is could allow enough room for the trunk lid to open without interference with the wing. For the NASCAR entries, the angle of the wing and the height were carefully tested for each track to provide optimal performance at speeds.

The Superbird and Charger Daytona were built on the same Chrysler platform. Even though this was the case, there were many differences between the two. The bodywork was different and the Superbird's nose was one inch longer than the Charger's. The wing had a raised entry angle that swept back farther and inclined towards the body's centerline.

http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/5619/showfield7ba.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/14/showfield7ba.jpg/)

Rules changed on the NASCAR circuit for 1970, making it hard to homologate a vehicle for racing. The rules for the year prior stated that 500 examples had to be produced before being allowed to race on the stock car circuit. For 1970 the rules stated that at least one example had to be built for each dealership.

1969 Charger Daytona Production = 503
1970 SuperBird Production = 1,920

Various sources report the following transmission break-out for 440, 440 Six-Barrel and 426 Hemi cars:

440 6-bbl: 408 Automatics
440 6-bbl: 308 Four Speeds
426 8-bbl: 77 Automatics
426 8-bbl: 58 Four Speeds
440 4-bbl: 618 Automatics
440 4-bbl: 466 Four Speeds

TOTAL = 1,920

Back in the early 70’s Ray Nichels of Nichels Engineering, the NASCAR supercar builder won a government bid to build a vehicle for the EPA. The goal was simple, (At least for Ray it was). Build a vehicle that was capable of chasing commercial aircraft for the sake of government testing of pollution, noise, tire dust etc. Ray stepped up to the challenge and chose the 70 Superbird, purchased relatively new from a local individual.

Sox and Martin 1970 Plymouth SuperBird

http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/701/1970superbirdrwb60djpg.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/43/1970superbirdrwb60djpg.jpg/)

In the early '70s, the Sox & Martin team even had a 440-powered Super Bird that was driven by Joe Fisher. In May 1970 at Suffolk County Raceway, the car ran in the low 11s. That's impressive when you consider that Jake had his hands tied fairly tight in regards to engine rules and allowances. For starters, he was not allowed to do any boring of the cylinders, only standard practice blueprinting was allowed. The engine had to remain the stock cubic inch displacement. He could, however, change the camshaft but was very limited in his choices at the time. In regards to carburetion, it had to be a factory available unit for the car. To say he was able to make power while his hands were tied is an understatement.

This is quite possibly the wildest looking winged car there ever was! It was owned by Rome Benedict who was a disc jockey at the radio station WGOW, aka Super Go, out of the southern U.S. Rome, who went by the stage name of "Romeo from Super Go", is shown here with his Superbird which was used for mobile radio station promotions, as you will notice the bullhorn mounted between the rear wing uprights. At this time, the car had a white bucket seat interior, and was customized with red velvet seat inserts.

"As you can see from these photos, the Utica Club Beer SuperBird has had quite a life so far. It all started in 1970, when Duncan McCully, who is shown standing with the car in the photo at right, worked for West End Brewing Company in Utica, NY in Public Relations as Promoter of Sales.

Mr. McCully approached F.X. Matt, the owner of the brewery, and suggested that they purchase 'one of those wild looking winged Plymouths', put some of the company's logos on it and sponsor a lot of the modified car races at Utica, Rome and all over at upstate New York race tracks to help promote Utica Club Beer.

January 19, 2010 - Rare find or basket case? Either way this back-lot 1970 Plymouth Superbird with a 440 6-pack was snatched up by a new owner after spending less than a week on the popular classified site, Craigslist. At $55,000 this “restoration ready” project vehicle sold for approximately half of its restored value.
