The Rise and Fall of soap opera effect (HELP!)

Hello everybody. I need some help.

When I first went into circuit city 2 years ago and saw the "soap opera" effect I knew I wanted a T.V that did that. About 3 weeks ago I decided it was time to replace my 65" Mitsubishi DLP. I went into best buy not knowing anything and bought a plasma because it said 600hz as opposed to 240hz (yea, I know). I brought the plasma home and realized that I would never get the soap opera effect with it so I kind of gave up on it. I got the samsung c500 from best buy. It was a black friday special. I wasn't too impressed with the picture. So the next day I took it back. Then I got the Sony 58HX800 which is an LED-LCD 240hz TV. And here is pretty much what happened.....

First Night: OMG THIS THING IS AWESOME I LOVE THE SOAP OPERA EFFECT!!!!!

Second night: Hmm still pretty cool but now things are starting to look a bit weird.

Third night: Why does it look like people are so choppy and everything looks so fake? And why do I see so many motion squares?(<---what are these?? Every once in while when the picture panned I would see little squares everywhere)

Fourth night: :banghead: Where did I put that darn receipt at?

As you can see I pretty much crashed.

Now I need some help! I want a plasma (again :yippee:) because I couldn't even really play my xbox because of the lag. I am going to take my T.V back and I don't know which one to get. I am to the point right now that I just want to go back to my DLP because I don't see much of a difference.

I am thinking about getting the Samsung 8000 series or the Panasonic VT25. Both 58"
I am a little hesitant because I already got a plasma that I wasn't to impressed with it. Are all plasmas created equally minus 3D? Any help anyone could give me would be great. I just want a T.V that is smooth, crisp and clear. I don't think that is too much to ask for a T.V that is a couple thousand dollars. Or should I just stay with the DLP?

Soap opera effect is one of those things that people *think* they like but after some time it gets annoying. Modern plasmas shouldnt have any issue with this though unless you have some setting turned on that smooths out video artificially. Otherwise, any good plasma will probably work for you. They are NOT all the same either. Pannys tend to get blacks best, Sammys tend to render colors better. The other plasma players are worth looking at too, like LG.

You didn't say which plasma brand/model you tried before. That might help.

SOE can look neat/cool in the bright stores but it can get tiring after a while. Did you try adjusting it on the Samsung? Did you also try using the GAME MODE on it, and then adjust the picture settings to taste? GAME mode tends to do less processing of the video and also helps reduce the lag you saw.

If you still cannot get what you want out of it, then just return it while you can and look at the Panasonic & Samsung plasmas. Yes the higher end models ARE better than the lower end models in just about every aspect of PQ, The best 3DTV plasmas are also the best 2DTV plasmas because what makes a great 3DTV also helps make 2D viewing better .

Sorry if my post was a bit confusing but the first plasma I had was the samsung 500 series. Then I got the Sony braiva HX8000.

Turn off all of the motion enhancements and you should have a damn nice picture.

I think I'm just going to return it and get the Samsung PN58C8000 because the plasma will have the better picture and better lag time. Also, it includes the MJC so when watching football it will look pretty good. I know the V25 has better blacks but also have heard that in 3 years they are going to rise 3x.

Any thoughts?

Many of the 2009 models had that much of a rise, but the 2010 models like the VT25 is still an unknown, but is not expected to rise that much from what I have read. A Panasonic rep was previously quoted to say that after the first rise the second rise is only going to be around 20% if I remember correctly. Call Robert at Value Electronics as he has both models still on the wall at his store and the Panasonic still has the best PQ and better blacks with I think about 1,000 hours on them. He is leaving them on constantly to accelerate the hours to test this for us. Great place to buy from as well.

Am I correct to assume that this only an issue with LCD screens?

http://img1.jurko.net/avatar_19063.gif....Correct, LCDs with 240hz processing...the interpolation by the video processing is the culprit. I personally don't want my movies with rich film quality looking like "As the world turns".

P.S. Welcome to the forum by the way...:hithere:
