Vizio 50" Plasma from 2007 Christmas

10-12-2010, 11:03 AM
You guys remember the 50" Vizio plasma that WalMart had for $100 back in '07 around Christmas-time? I bought one of those and now I have a problem.

My fiance was in the living room hanging up Halloween decorations, and she heard some funny noise coming from the TV. She figured it was jsut the satellite cutting out as it sometimes does sue to weather, so thought nothing of it. Ten minutes later she turns around and there's no picture on the TV at all. No menus can be seen, no picture from anything at all, only audio from the satellite channel she was watching. She turned off the TV, and I came out to look at it 10 minutes later, and cannot get any audio or video from the TV. You can tell the screen has some sort of activity because when you turn it on, it goes from the solid black, to just a shade lighter. I took off the back cover but couldn't find any bad caps or anything. Any ides what may have went bad? Lots of LG boards in there, so maybe Ican replace one and give that a shot?

I assume you already tried unplugging it for a couple of hours since you took the back off. Other than that I can't think of what it could be without completely guessing. At least you only paid $100.00 for it 3 years ago so you got your monies worth.

Did you happen to get an extended warranty with it? I imagine it would have only cost about $15.00 with the price at $100.00 so I hope you did that.

Yeah, duh me, it was $1000, not a hundred bucks.

Oh. That sucks. I was wondering how I missed a deal like that as I always check BF deals.

Yeah, so I have had it unplugged for about 4 days now... never bothered to plug it back in as I figured a board went bad. Worth it to try plugging it back in or not really?

I just tried plugging it back in and no go: when I pressed the power button it kinda flashed a grey on a portion of the screen for a millisecond, you can hear the speakers getting power and that's it. No display.

When you checked the capacitors did you look at the normally completely flat tops of them? If they are not completely flat and are swelled that is the likely problem.

It's a bit hard to read the tops of them in regards to swelling due to them having the x indentation in them. If I had to judge I would say they look okay though. I can upload large pics for you to see when I get home. I'm on my phone now.

Pics would help and make sure it is as close to a side view of the caps as possible.

Ok I will get them and upload them when I return home. Not sure how well I can get hem from side view since the boards are in awkward spots but I'll try.

IIIRC, those plasmas with all the LG parts were largely responsible for a lot of negativity toward Vizio that still persists, to an extent today. Not surprisingly, LG had high failure rates with their plasmas as well. Unless you get real lucky locating a faulty board, I think you're looking at a replacement TV.

Here are the photos. They're 3000x4000 so they're very large, approx 5MB each. I left them this large so you can see the details.

One question, though, is what is the switch for on the AV input board? It's a push button switch, located on the left-hand side of the board. Pic #571 is the switch, and Pics #564 and #569 show the switch's location, which is on the left hand side of the board, in the middle of it vertically.

It's 6:54 here now, please allow another 15 minutes for them to finish uploading before trying to view. The first ones in the list will be available first, then the following ones. My net is slow :)

Links don't work. Look s like you need to be logged in to see them.

Sorry, I had the 'jpg' lowercase and my camera writes them as uppercase. Please try now.

All but the first one work now. From what I could see the caps look ok.

So then what do you think I should try to do? I get no video and no audio from any source, and I can't even see when I try turning the volume up or down ot when I try to access the menus, etc.

Any idea what that button does that I mentioned?

It sounds like the power board to me but that is only a guess.

I'm getting like a buzzing noise out of it when I turn it on. Not sure if it's the typical Plasma TV buzz or not, I am very close to it and the back's off now. One of the boards has 4 LED's labeled 0-3 from top to bottom. 0 and 2 are solidly lit when I turn the TV on.

10-18-2010, 11:48 PM
When I power the TV off, then turned it back on, LEDs 1 and 2 were lit.

Can someone get a service manual for me possibly? I really don't want to throw it away when I can fix it and sell it.
