Channel numbers

I'm upgrading to HD cable when I get my new HDTV, but I have a question, it's not really important, but still wondering since I'm trying to learn everything I can, and it can get confusing...

When you add HD service, to watch channels in HD, can I keep watching them on the channels I always have that I'm getting them in SD/digital on (below 100 usually) or do I have to go up in the 700's and 800's? I ask because I was watching something on a channel and it said that the program was in HD (if you had access to it), but it was just one of the lower numbers that I'm getting the channel in SD on, like 28 or something but Charter claims on their channel lineup that channel in HD is in the 700s.

So, my question, if I am making any sense...if I get HD, say I want to watch USA in HD - can I keep watching USA on channel 30 like I have for ages and get it in HD, or do I watch it on 782? And, not all shows are available in HD, so do you have to switch back and forth between numbers to watch certain shows on the same network? It gets confusing. It's like you're getting 2 of the same channel. Just something that I was curious about.

Thank you, hope I didn't come accross like too big of an idiot :huh

Your not an idiot. You WILL get 2 channels. One SD (lower) one HD (higher channel). Once you get HD, you probably will not ever view the SD version unless your surfing through channels to block all non-HD. Where I live (Time Warner) I just add 12 then the SD #, like 30=1230HD.

That is 1 of many things I don't like about the cable in my area. Having to go through a whole set of HD channels after you learned the SD. I think there is a funtion to map them, but never cared since I dropped them many years ago. With Dish and DTV, the SD and HD channels are the same If it is in SD and HD, it defaults to the HD channel. That is the way they all should be.

Thanks.
My local channels are done that way, at least some of them - 4 (NBC) is listed as 704 in HD.

Charter really needs to work on their HD offerings  I've gotten good service from them, but their HD is embarrassing. If you have access to it (which I don't) satellite HD is much better. They should just give it for free like Brighthouse, Cablevision, Time Warner if they aren't going to beef up their offerings.

So do I have to go through and block the SD channels out or will they automatically disappear since they are available on an HD feed?
