Just wondering if there is a way to test the RCA's to see if they are working properly and not shorting out or have a short in it?

get a $5 multimeter from Horrible Freight, set it to check resistance. (1) Red lead to center pin, black lead to shell - unhooked cable should read "0" resistance. (2) At other end of cable, short out center pin and shell, now test resistance on far end...should read "infinite" resistance (a dead short).

simple first tests, anything other than the expected results can indicate a problem with the cable. You can also do test (1) and wiggle the cable and connectors around - a jump in the readings can indicate an intermediate short.

But the best option is to take the $5, add a few more, and just get new cables from Monoprice http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10218#1021803 and be done with it.

yep ! And just to use the right terminology, the "connectors" used are RCA style connectors, the cables are shielded audio cables with RCA male connectors.

good luck !
