Anything can be repaired, but is the tv worth repairing? If you are comfortable taking a tv completely apart and putting it back together again, you can fix that yourself for $120 or so. If you want a repairman to do it, he will replace the entire light engine and with labor that will come to about $500-800.

If you want to do it yourself, start by searching the internet for a free Service Manual. If you can't find one free, they are only $15 or so.

Yes it does sound like the light engine. Here's how your tv works: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLLHnQ4y-wo Basically there's 3 LCD chips that create the colors and image by blending together. When these chips start to melt you will get those blue spots, pixilation even vertical lines. You will need to replace the light engine. Have a blessed one!

Blotches on this TV is usually from a burned polarizing filter, mostly the blue one. These can be replaced without buying a new light engine.
