Red out of alignment

Put in the Avatar blue ray and while getting it setup, noticed I had a red ghost about 2 inches below everything. Doing some research and "sounds" like a 400 dollar repair minimum to fix it. It's a 7 year old rear projection crt in my sig. Should I scrap it and update?

I would recommend looking at a replacement TV due to the advancements in technology. You will be amazed at how a new 58" or 65" plasma will look compared to your current display, simply amazing...

Your Hits is suffering from a convergence ic failure. The $400 fix estimate is accurate.

While I agree with l2w that you may well be served by checking out the newer tech, the Hits can still "hold its own" when properly functioning with any fpd out there today.

There is also from the fact that once you replace one of the ic's there is a probability that the other (the blue) will fail soon, I'd start looking for a new display.

Hard to see these CRT based units leaving... but their time has passed.

Had the TV repaired today. Did an upgrade convergence repair to prevent the others from failing. All for 300. He would have just done a simple repair to the red for 200. So, TV is back and will have to re watch avatar without the distortion now.

Awesome, glad the repair wasn't too costly.

Outstanding!

A fine large display resurrected. I hope you'll get another ten years out of it.

That is my hope, I spent 3 grand for the thing in Jan of '03. Have to get at least 10 years to make it worth it.

Did it go 'out' all at once, or was it gradual?

All at once. First thing I noticed when I turned it on for the eve was the double arrow instead of just one for play on the ps3, knew instantly before pic came on something was wrong.
