Need advice on TV purchase

04-26-2010, 02:34 PM
Hey guys, I'm looking to buy a new HDTV. Would love to hear your suggestions.

1. How far away will you be from the display when watching it? (Be as exact as possible. A 5' range difference IS a major difference - Please limit the range to 2')

6' to 8'

2. What TV will it be replacing (i.e. 27" tube TV, etc) (include TV age as well)

26" Vizio 720p LCD that I bought over the summer of 2007

3. What will you be watching on it (i.e. 1/3 movies, 1/3 TV shows, 1/6 Sports, 1/6 gaming console, etc)

1/3 TV, 1/3 gaming, 1/3 movies

4. Will a computer be connected to use the display as a monitor? If so, what percent of the time?

I'd like to have it connected as a monitor, would only be using it as a computer for maybe an hour per night on average

5. Will you be getting a Blu-ray player to watch movies and will you be getting any HD service from cable/sat, or will you just be watching SD programming, and an upscaling SD DVD player?

I have a Blu-ray player and receive HD service from my school, but I will mainly be watching SD programming when watching TV

6. Are you looking for the best in class display, the best bargain display, or best bang for the buck in the middle display?

Probably best bang for the buck middle display

7. What is the room lighting situation? (i.e. can you control the lighting? Can you use light blocking blinds, etc to control it?)

I can control the lighting well

8. What is your budget range?

$700 - $900 if possible

9. Will people be watching at multiple viewing angles or just usually one person sitting directly in the center?

Mainly in the center, but would like to be able to have people watch from an angle if necessary

10. When will most viewing be done on the display (i.e. Daytime or after sunset)?

Doesn't really matter seeing as I can control the light, but most will be after sunset

I don't really have a preference between LCD and Plasma, but I will be gaming / using as a monitor, so burn-in might be an issue. I look forward to hearing your suggestions.

Forgot to mention that I would like the TV to be 42" or bigger =)
