Blizzard has announced a $99.99 Collector's Edition for StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, packing goodies including a 176-page art book, a 'Thor' unit pet for World of Warcraft and the original StarCraft plus expansion on a USB thumb drive shaped like protagonist Jim Raynor's dog tags.

Currently in closed beta, Wings of Liberty is the first part of the StarCraft II trilogy. Blizzard promises to reveal the release date "in the coming weeks" but it was still slated for the first half of 2010 as recently as February.

Blizzard also reveals that the standard edition of its PC and Mac RTS sequel will cost $59.99 and that its digital release will follow "shortly after [the retail] release."

"We've been looking forward to revisiting the StarCraft universe with our players for over 10 years, and we wanted to offer an epic collector's edition that commemorated the occasion," said Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime. "This special version of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty--easily our biggest collector's edition to date--does just that, and we think StarCraft II gamers will really enjoy all of the exclusive contents."
The full list of Collector's Edition goodies follows below.

* The Art of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, a 176-page book featuring artwork from the game
* An exclusive 2GB USB flash drive replica of Jim Raynor's dog tag, which comes preloaded with the original StarCraft and the StarCraft: Brood War expansion set
* A behind-the-scenes DVD containing over an hour of developer interviews, cinematics with director's commentary, and more
* The official StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty soundtrack CD, containing 14 epic tracks from the game along with exclusive bonus tracks
* StarCraft comic book issue #0, a prequel to the comic series
* A World of Warcraft mini Thor in-game pet that can be applied to all World of Warcraft characters on a single Battle.net account
* Exclusive Battle.net downloadable content, including special portraits for your Battle.net profile, decals to customize your units in-game, and a visually unique version of the terran Thor unit

This sucks, I no longer buy new games from Activision and I really want this one.... I am going to have to buy this used, hopefully I can find one right away...

They'll probably tie the key to the first BNet account it's activated on.

I doubt you'll be able to buy it used.

Want a better RTS that's already available? Company of Heroes. $10 for the GOTY edition on Amazon. 100 hours of glory.

If you want a SciFi FPS, I recommend Supreme Commander 1 (not 2, just no) or Dawn of War II.

Dawn of War II has XBL cheesemints if that helps your decision. It's a really great and original RTS.

Where is your interest in the game coming from Mase? The original StarCraft? Because if so, this is only a sequel in terms of the world it exists in. Everyone who coded the first SC is long gone. Mostly to Relic (CoH and DoW).

I did go ahead and preorder it with the intention of scalping the hell out of it. Sealed Blizzard CEs go for >$300 within months after release.

I have no qualms about making money off of Blizztards.

Yea I have always been a big RTS fan, that is the only type of PC gaming I did, WC II/III, SC 1, C&C and various other ones.. Halo Wars really lit that fire up again as it was soooo well done on a console, it was dumbed down but it was hands down the best console RTS we have ever seen..

I know SC 2 wont be anything like what I remember but I love RTS games and I love the universe that SC takes place in.. I just hope a used game will work as I stand by my decision not to support Activision anymore.

You should really try Company of Heroes. Easily the best RTS since the ones you mentioned. It's downright amazing.

I know a couple guys in the beta, and they seem to REALLY like it. They're not forcing you to buy the CE, I'll guess the regular edition is the same 50 dollars every other PC game is right? Also, who buys used PC games?

I always thought that it was going to be EA that was going to ruin PC gaming. Turns out that EA is a threat, but the biggest to our hobby is Ubisoft and Activision.........

BTW, where in the hell has Vivendi been lately? I havn't heard of them releasing any games in a while.

Regular version is $60, and it's only the Terran campaign. Zerg and Protoss will be sold separately.

You know I read this and really after thinking about it, I may just hold off all together and buy the Battle chest when it finally comes out. Used of course

Talk about Nickle and diming us, Blizzard would release expansions but we would always get the campaigns all on one disc and the expansions were year/s after the initial release.. This just seems like gouging the more I think about it.

You can't gouge the willing.

The MW2 Stimulus Package brought in $40M last week.
