Ive decided to go with an LCD over plasma b/c between my wife and kid I know a plasma wont last as long... I was looking at an LG
42lh40 because I had read some good things, but the LG website says its discontinued tho I can probably find it somewhere. Anyway I wanted to get the experts advice on what they'd recommend!

1. How far away will you be from the display when watching it? (Be as exact as possible. A 5' range difference IS a major difference - Please limit the range to 2')

8-10'

2. What TV will it be replacing (i.e. 27" tube TV, etc) (include TV age as well)
3-4 year old non hd 19" lcd

3. What will you be watching on it (i.e. 1/3 movies, 1/3 TV shows, 1/6 Sports, 1/6 gaming console, etc)
1/3 TV, 1/3 movies(HD and SD), 1/3 XBOX 360

4. Will a computer be connected to use the display as a monitor? If so, what percent of the time?
No computer to the TV

5. Will you be getting a Blu-ray player to watch movies and will you be getting any HD service from cable/sat, or will you just be watching SD programming, and an upscaling SD DVD player?
HD games from Xbox HDMI, HD/SD movies from external hard drive via HDMI Wester Digital TV converter for external HDD

6. Are you looking for the best in class display, the best bargain display, or best bang for the buck in the middle display?
Best bang for buck in the middle

7. What is the room lighting situation? (i.e. can you control the lighting? Can you use light blocking blinds, etc to control it?)
Can be controlled, light blocking blinds, glare sometimes

8. What is your budget range?
up to $1000

9. Will people be watching at multiple viewing angles or just usually one person sitting directly in the center?
Multiple angles but not extremely wide

10. When will most viewing be done on the display (i.e. Daytime or after sunset)?
both daytime and after sunset

Please let me know what my best options are!!

LG is known for high failure rates, poor longevity and terrible customer service.

Plasma TV's last longer than LCD's do.

With this information it would seem that a 50" or above Panasonic plasma would be your best choice.

Exactly. Plasmas have TWICE the life of LCDs ( 100,000 hours for Panasonic plasmas vs. 50,000 hours for LCDs ). I'm wondering WHERE you got your information. Certainly from no reputable source. And, I agree that a Panasonic plasma would be your best bet. And, stay a way from LG ( Lucky Goldstar ). Their reliability leaves MUCH to be desired, as does their customer service. :2cents

thanks for the input, the main reason i was leaning LCD is cuz wife and young child will be using it and I know they're gunna leave stuff paused on the DVR even when I tell them not to, so worried about IR and burn in... Consumer reports rated that LG lcd pretty good so thats why I was thinking about it. I did see a good toshiba review but the response time was high, like 8ms or so, and ive heard that anything over 5ms is noticably annoying for games

my goal was to spend around 700-800 before tax/shipping, 1080p, I dont care about crazy stuff like internet options or anything excessive.

With so many models to choose from I get a bit frustrated trying to sift through it all and find out which are good and bad from each manufacturer. If its not too much trouble can you suggest a few of the best models of plasma and lcds in the range of what Im looking for? thanks!

I have a Toshiba Regza and the response time is horrible. 8ms is almost good enough for regular programming, but 8ms for sports, especially hockey, is terrible.

Basically all I do is watch sports, while all my kids just game. I went LCD for this reason. They are careless and definitely use it more than me. I wish I would have gotten something else.

That said, if the Toshiba fits your budget and you like it, get it. I am just giving you my opinion. I know both General308 and Loves2Watch have Toshiba TVs that they enjoy.
