Sony 52" XBR9 - game lag

Not sure where this belongs so please move mods if needed.

Within the last couple months I bought a Sony KDL-52XBR9 and have managed to get my inputs for regular viewing and movies tuned exceptionally well and love the picture.

That said, on my 3rd HDMI input I have it connected straight to my PS3 and have noticed that when I play games that seem to be running in lower resolutions or something have an issue when rendering "light" colors.

An example would be when I play oblivion and I am talking to someone that is next to a well lit area (torch colors) or it is daytime out there is a noticeable "lag" when moving and what not .. also in Bad Company 2 when in a couple of the more dusty maps, I have VERY noticeable video lag.

In both games when I get out of those areas or go in to a darker place, I have no issues at all. It's almost like the PS3 is having a hard time rendering those colors.

Is there anything I can do to resolve this? Thanks in advance.

Yes, there is - take it back and get a plasma. Seriously, all LCDs suffer from lag times, as well as poor black levels , motion blur and limited viewing angles. Plasmas suffer from NONE of these deficiencies. You can most likely get a similar sized plasma for LESS money than an LCD, and have a superior picture as well. :2cents

If your TV has a game mode make sure to use this when playing games. Also turn off all motion enhancements and the like.

I agree this should be the first step.

It is not an issue with the PS3 and IS with the display. The PS3 has a very powerful Cell processor in it and most displays are underpowered for what they should do IMO.

I'm curious, what is it that makes games better if the motion enhancement is off? I thought that they were supposed to help out the game.

The motion enhancers require pre-processing, which will increase input lag (the lag between when the source creates an image and it is actually displayed on screen)

Correct! Most displays seem to have inadequate processors in them to do this in real time.

My blacks look great and I have ZERO motion blur. I'll give you the angle issue however, but other than that .. this LCD has been stellar.

It also looks like I had a heat issue .. my PS3 was put in to a entertainment cabinet and was getting way too hot in that confined space. It is now out in the open and last night after going off of some of the HELPFUL posts and turning on game mode and letting the PS3 get some air, I didn't notice any game lag at all. I will test some others to be certain, but it looks like with those 2 things I appear to be fixed.

Oh and I also noticed that the 3 games I play right now .. the one that I call "fixed" runs in hi-def (Borderlands) and the other 2 I think are not. I think in those cases the PS3 is attempting to "up convert" them and has hard locked a couple times. But I think it was due to heat more than anything.

Thanks again. Hopefully the other 2 will be as successful as my first attempt was.
