Seeking Guidance . . .

I am wanting to buy two Blu Ray players in the next few weeks . . . One for myself and one for my dad and I would like some suggestions to guide me in the right direction.

I have a new Panasonic G10 46" (love it) and am looking at the DMP-BD65 and will be linking into the network (wired, not wireless) . . . I have nothing fancy for audio yet, just feeding the Plasma with an HDMI cable for now.

My dad has an older Mitsubishi 57" DLP and has a simple tuner with two speakers, nothing surround, nothing fancy. I am thinking a Panasonic DMP-BD45 for him cause he will not be wired or wireless. just HDMI into the TV . . . hope he can tie in to the amp to push the sound through his speakers . . . he is a concert buff and has a Tom Petty Blu Ray and I kinda wanna get him started with something simple . . .

Any suggestions ? Good to go ? Turn around and save my money ?

Thanx
Eric

The Panasonic DMP-BD65 is fine and very inexpensive and I suggest you get both of you the same player. If you want to spend less and don't care about streaming options, the DMP-BD60 can be found now at closeout prices. You will want to update his firmware when needed and understand all operational questions which will be easier if you have the same player.

You say he likes concerts, does he have a surround sound audio system? If so, you may want a player that will work best with his audio system whatever it might be.

Thanx Chris, dad has a simple tuner and two speaker setup . . . enough to shake the windows, but not surround or anything fancy . . . old school but works for him :)

I will snag two of the BD65's and update his from time to time when I notice an update on mine :) Maybe someday I will get him hooked on Netflix :)

Maybe I will snag two of the BD85's :) they have some special audio "effects" I read about in a review . . . ok maybe not but still

Thanx again

:)

I think both of you will be delighted with either Panasonic model and either will work great with his stereo audio system. Sears has some Soundstage Blu-ray concerts on clearance now, Tom Petty, Stevie Nicks, Michael McDonald, Foreigner, Seal and a Best of Soundstage with a performance or two by several artists. Some stores may have some others, but I doubt it and at this time, you might be lucky to find any of them. The prices are $4.97 each, I bought one of each.

the BD85's showed up today ! ! ! I hooked it up and updated the firmware . . . popped in a DVD and watched it . . . then went and bought a Blu Ray . . . hiccupped a few times so I am not sure if it is the disk or the player but I will try more before I panic ;)

I do have a question . . . would a category 2 HDMI cable help ? I have an older one right now . . . not sure if that would have anything to do with the burps I witnessed today . . .

I am going to deliver dads tomorrow and get his set up ! I am excited to see how it does on his system !

Thanx for all the guidance

I guess it is possible the HDMI cable you have is bad but I believe that is very unlikely. What Blu-ray disc were you playing and what problems did you see specifically?

I picked up a 10 dollar 2 meter HDMI from blockbuster video.

We picked up Stargate (the movie) and as it was going through the opening credits . . . the sound cut out and the screen showed "snow" for a second then nothing . . . black screen . . . but the counter was still going . . . had to hit stop

started again from the start and never saw that issue again

it did "skip" a time or two during the movie as if the disk was scratched but nothing as bad as the first

gonna snag another movie a little more current and see if it works better

Sounds like a firmware issue. Does the player have the current firmware?

Yes . . . I flashed it on day one . . . I did get a new HDMI cable last night so I will give it another shot . . .

Another problem I am having which has started since the addition of the Blu Ray player . . . My TV fails to turn on . . . ARGH . . . I had it plugged into a UPS and have read that may be the issue so I have removed the backup battery and I will see if that has any influence on the scenario . . .

FUN FUN ! ;)

Now that sounds like an HDMI handshake issue. Look up your specific model and see if there are any reviews where there where HDMI handshake issues with certain brands of players.

even with everything unplugged the TV fails to power on first time . . . I have read about a problem that many Panasonic Plasma owners have been commenting about . . . argh . . . looks like I may be calling for a service call before I can get this Blu Ray player going at full awesomeness . . . anyway . . . I will keep trying :)
