Guys, I just recieved a free 42" 1080 from Ashleys Furniture and was wondering if its necessary to buy a Blu Ray Player? I'm running on local cable with some digital channels and no HD cables and I'm not overly impressed. Nice pictures, but nothing to celebrate about. Should I get HD cables, Blu Ray, PS3? Just need some idea to start. Thanks in advance.

Are you getting any HD channels from the cable-- does the TV have a QAM tuner? Some local cable providers still provide in-the-clear HD channels which can be tuned in with the QAM tuner. (Not all HDTVs have a QAM tuner, and not all cable companies provide in-the-clear signals.)

It is not necessary to buy a Blu Ray player-- unless you want to buy/rent movies and seen them in high definition.

You also need a HD cable/sattelite box to get HD.

Plug the cable in and do a full auto scan.

If you find digital channels, some of them might be in HD.

But you are right, SD on a HD set isn't very good.
