Panasonic S77 vs S97 is the extra $50 worth it for the S97?

Hello All,

Looking in to purchasing my first HD set up.. I currently plan to go with the new Sony RP LCD (KDFe55a20). I have been looking into the best DVD player currently available in the $200 range and came up with the panasonic S77. According to the review (forget the site but it is referenced a lot here) the S77 and S97 are quite similarly rated on tests but the S97 is said "to have better attention to detail in the core performance".

I can only find these online so it would be a pain to return it. Does anyone know from experience or a friend that might have one of these platers if the extra $50 for the S97 is worthwhile?

Check out the Secret Home Theater DVD Shootout (http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/cgi-bin/shootout.cgi?function=search&articles=all&type=DVD+Player&manufacturer=0&maxprice=400&deInt=0&mpeg=0)

Note that the S77 Ranked 2nd. The S97 ranked 5th.

Standard definition DVD players have almost reached the end of their evolutionary cycle, and improvements are finite. They have been around for years now and the refinements have trickled down to even the lowest ranks. Even the $49 bargain bin progressive scan players look good on decent televisions.

HD-DVD and BlueRay are right around the corner, take the cheaper unit and stash the cash. When the HD Players come around, retire that one to a bedroom.
