Woohoo!! Got my kart racer

Picked up Sonic & Sega all star racing on wed. and have run through all cups on beginner and advanced as well as most missions so far.

Impressions- Finally got my kart racer for 360 and it is a good one. Overall the game is solid and hope to get into much mp this weekend.
Some of the good - 21 characters plus you can race with your Avatar.
Power-ups are pretty standard with a few new twists and each character to include your avatar has it's own special power pickup unique to them.
AI is solid without much complaint - the guy you passed a lap ago is not all of a sudden right behind you.
Controls are responsive and appropriate.

Few minor things- at times collision detection with walls/obstacles can be a bit tricky and sometimes you may get placed back on the track in a horrible bind.
No co-op play in cup races- bit of a bummer but many multi-player options.
Cups could have a little more 'theme' to them rather than seeming like a haphazard group of 4 tracks put in a series. The tracks are however large with much eye candy - at times they almost seem too 'busy'
The game relies too heavily on drifting (which done for longer periods gives you greater turbo powers. Some races turn into slide fests all around the track.

Although the characters are numerous many are extremely obscure.

Need a little more time with this but for me it is a Mario killer and that says something.

Goes with the territory since Mario Kart 64, they worked out on MK games that only allowing bonuses for drifting on corners to stop "snaking" and the same was done for Ridge Racer 6/7.

I love these games, glad you're enjoying it. I'm torn between the HD console versions with unstable frame rates but online play, or the PC version coming out shortly that is less than half the price but doesn't feature online play (no doubt some clever tech types will mod it in in the future).

Ya this game received fairly good reviews so I'm not surprised you're enjoying it. :D

I've thought about picking it up myself, but, honestly, theres just no room in the budget. It's not a must-have for me. Still nice to see Sega put out something with Sonic in it that doesn't completely blow though.

Once again it takes a (truly great!) British developer to do the job right ;)

Sumo Digital are a decent studio but sadly have to rely too much on filler games to get their funding. I'd love a studio to set em free on their own game see what they're capable of.

I was not that impressed with the demo. The game play felt odd and not that fun to play. CTR still is one of the best cart racers IMHO. The weapon that turns your screen upside (or something) is dumb.

Go back to Halo frat boi :p

Didn't play the demo but the full game is very good and listed at $49.99 saving ten bucks (plus an additional $5 coupon I had) was nice. I may just look and see what else Sumo Digital has done.

Well the studio that made it have excellent links with ntsc-uk (and are actually just down the road from where I live), they've got a long pedigree being formed from Infogrames Sheffield House, who for true gaming veterans were originally known as Gremlin Interactive.

They've got some serious experience of driving games being responsible for some of the 8 and 16 bits finest racing titles. They also did Wacky Races (best non Nintendo kart racer at the time) on Dreamcast amongst other games.

Since becoming Sumo they've been a bit hit and miss due to all the licensed shite and quick handheld ports etc they've been roped into doing on tight deadlines, but the games they get freedom with (and it's generally Sega that give it them) they do some seriously good stuff. All home console ports of Outrun are down to them inc the incredible PSP and PS2 versions which I would have thought were impossible until they did them!.

Anyway, the staffers from Sumo state that the frame rate has been tidied up some for the full releases and apparently the demo is a poor representation of the final product, which is something of a hallmark for this gen.

Seems I vaguely remember Gremlin from back in the day. Didn't play the demo but after a week the game is holding up well no glaring issues for me . On advanced and expert the AI is stellar. REally having a lot of fun with it.

If u like MK (and wipeout), you should like Blur. It is MK with real cars. It supports up to 20 racers online.

Loved wipeout - will have to look at blur - thanks

Blur looks excellent, it's not a kart racer though Cygnus doesn't understand the finer aspects of the genre, too busy with guns and space marines ;) but it should be an excellent arcade racer. There is also Split Second coming soon which looks incredible, that's from the developers behind Pure so they've already proven themselves as a quality arcade racing developer.

Sorry mikey, but other beta testers have said the same thing. Some seem to really like. IMHO its OK, not worth full price...but what do u expect from unimaginative brit developers? :what:;)

Can't be like Mario Kart if it isn't AAA ;)

After consideration I do notice one minor flaw w/ Sega all star racing. On some tracks (particualrly the mansion / forest based tracks. Blacks are poor lacking adequate shadow detail. Adjusting the brightness in the game options does improve this but the gamma (brightness) seems a bit high then. I noted this on both my plasma and projector, however utilizing the 'game' setting on my projector does have a shadow detail enhancement which works quite well.

Well I'd make the most of this... first 2 weeks sales have been dire even by Sega standards.

70,000 Wii
40,000 Xbox 360
36,000 PS3
35,000 DS

Sega must be thrilled.

Hey AvP is selling well for them (360 version is at #11 in Feb NPD)... the sega racing game is just not that good IMHO. I saw multiple ads for it on Speed channel (odd since game seems geared more towards MTV and cartoon network crowd). I noticed slowdowns in the ad, which is not good. I'd take blur over it any day. Blur's mayhem mode reminds me of twisted metal. IMHO kart racers (unless it is MK) have to have multiple game modes and options. I read that its battle mode can't be played online which was a bad decision...

Oh look... an FPS with space marines selling well on 360  :p If it didn't have a Sega badge on it, it'd easily be in the top 3.

The media would beg to differ with you this game has received favourable reviews all around. I hope the fact that the PS3 version is supposedly the most technically impressive version isn't clouding your fair and balanced judgement?

I don't know about the ad or the demo but as far as gameplay the thing is solid w/o slowdown ata 10 discounted price. 2 player co-op cup play is missing but other than that - take off the labels looking objectively this is the best cart racer since Mario Kart64.
