720p question

I have a 32" CRT HDTV but nowhere can I find that it can display 720p. I can play DVDs and games at 480p, the manual, and right on the TV itself claim 1080i, but 720p isn't mentioned. I'm planning on getting hooked up with digital cable and high-def, am I going to run into problems with high-def signals playing in 720p?

it's a Panasonic CT-32hc14 if that makes a differance.

Thx

CRT HDTV's cannot display 720p. Although some sets may accept a 720p signal, it is upconverted to 1080i for display.

According to your manual that I found on Panasonics website, your TV accepts 480i, 480p, and 1080i inputs. All HD cable and satellite receivers allow you to select the output resolution to match your TV. You will just need to set your receivers output res to 1080i. Then the receiver will automatically upscale 720p content to 1080i for you. This is quite common.

thanks for the info. from what I've been reading here, I've noticed that Tubes aren't all about 720p. I just didn't know what it would do if it got hit with the 720p; if it would convert, or just crap out. I'll have to wait until I get my equpiment from the cable company to see what options it gives me. It's only going to be a few channels that are high-def anyway... locals, HBO and ESPN, so I wasn't bugging or anything, but was hoppeful that I was going to be able to enjoy at least a little bit of HD goodness now and when the x-360 comes out.

In your case, a raw 720p signal would probably just give you a blank screen. Some CRT's have the capability to internally convert 720p. Its more or less just a convenience thing, you know? Your (future) HD Cable box should allow you to select 1080i output.

As far as X360 is concerned... the standard Xbox, when equipped with the HDPack, allows you to select 480p, 720p, or 1080i depending on your display. From this, I believe the X360 will do the same, considering they still have to support SD TV's as well.

True.

Its to be seen if the xbox360 can support anything other then what its going to support. The PS3 is still by far superior.

All set top boxes accept and output all the formats. It can also upconvert or downconvert to your perfered modes.

I agree with Mike that the PS3 is superior. Cannot beat the fact that there's more games and the PS3 will support 720p, 1080i, and 1080p. :yippee:

Well you also have to consider they are talking about delaying the PS3 until next fall. It is definatly going to be superior to the Xbox 360 since it isn't coming out until a year after the 360 launches.

A few things, the ps2 in fact can display 1080i HD content. Just play Grand Turismo 4 with component video inputs. Also, beauty takes time. Why rush greatness? Microsoft is rushing to put out the xbox 360, probably going to mess up like they did with the original xbox with the dangerous power cords. Sony is going to make sure there are no flaws with theirs.

Wow, you guys sure like your Sony. I have both an Xbox and a PS2, but I am sorry, Xbox is still my favorite system. When the 360 comes out I know I will love that. And if you guys are true gamers I know you will to. Everyone wants a new system and "Boys just love new toys".

Haaah Haaaah haaah. I've got one too. Had an RCA CRT for over 18 years. I'd take it over a Samsung or LG any day.
