MLB 10 The Show (Online League Updates)

SOBAY310
02-26-2010, 10:40 AM
Please post here if you would like to join our online MLB 10 The Show League.

We have a few people from another forum that are going to join up with the people here at HDF to form a SHOW league for the upcoming baseball season.

We'll figure out the details once we see the interface of the league, but I wanted to start a thread for you to sign up!

Feel free to post the team you would like to use as well.

Of course, I will go with my Dodgers!

How often of a committment is needed? (I'm a teacher and a baseball coach so time is limited). Also, I'm a Pirate fan (and would waste my time/take the Pirates)...since I would take Pittsburgh, you could sim most of the games and get the desired result. :D

I really wish I enjoyed Baseball because this idea seems like so much fun. :(

Maybe one day we'll have enough people here who want to start a FIFA league.

... Actually I'm gonna add the game to my Gamefly list anyways. I'll give it a run and see if I want to join the league just for fun. :o

Hey cherman!

Funny, I am going to school to be a teacher and am also a baseball coach...well, tee ball. hehe.

I'll put you down for the Pirates. We'll see the interface of the league, but it would be great to get in a few games a week. I think with baseball it's going to be easier to run a league than with football. In Madden, we had to wait for everyone to play their game before we advanced to the next week. With baseball I think we will all get a schedule of who we are playing and then set a start and end time of the league for everyone to get their games in.

Your team is the only one so far playing in the American league, so at this point you will be playing against CPU teams only.....except for the rare interleague games or if you make it to the World Series. Of course, we may get more members who may choose other teams in the AL. I'd think someone would for sure grab the Yankees or Red Sox.

Keebs, don't worry about Kam and the like. The way our league is going to be set up is different than Madden, Kammy. I believe we are going to be in a custom league where we are all in the same division, or we create our own divisions.

Again, I don't know for sure, so let's see how it looks when the game comes out. We're gonna have fun with this!

Kam can sticky it and just remove (online league signup) from the title once we get things moving.

I believe we're targeting to start our season in conjunction with the real MLB season (April 4th). Between now and then we can set up spring training games though to get used to finding each other online and everything.

I will post everyone's PSN ID...good idea. Once that's done we need to all make sure we add each other to our friends list.

No I don't hate him. I pm'd him earlier. I just don't think I can play in the league with you guys due to my schedule. I'm working midnights now and I sleep alot. On this shift you really don't have much of a life. I get off Tuesday morning at 8 and don't have to be back until Friday night at midnight. Then I work 2 12's. UUgh! I don't want you guys waiting for me to play. It wouldn't be fair. I have been looking at the thread though. My Indians are already taken. So I hope that explains it. Any suggestions though I'm open to hear them.

Hi guys,

I would like to play, if that's ok. Since the Dodgers are taken, I'll play as the Tampa Bay Rays. I'm not big into online gaming, but this sounds like a lot of fun.

Games I've played over the past 12 months

Uncharted 2
MLB 09 The Show
FIFA 10

As you can see, not a huge gamer, but I get hooked on games and can play for months (e.g. FIFA 10).

I almost didn't get the show. I went to best buy for my preorder and they ring me up. When the guy tears off my preorder receipt, I see Evan Longoria and the 2K logo. I had to explain to him that the Show was a different game. He had to go "check" to see if there were any left. Wow. Close one. Now that I've had my PS3 off for two days, we'll see what other errors (hopefully none) pop up.

PS Did anyone use their pre-order code for the stadiums? I got mine in the email from Best Buy and didn't see any show material in the store. I didn't want to put the code in, then it's not available yet, then I lose the code because it's a one-time use.

The game is awesome. You guys are in for one hell of a game. The new broadcast camera feels like you're watching a game on tv. My only gripe is they screwed up Cleveland's home batting helmets again. Supposed to be blue with the red bill, instead it's their away helmets which are all blue. So far that's my only bitch!

My complaint (just by a quick browse) is some unis are delegated as home or away only. Ex...The Pirates wear black on Friday home games, but it's listed as an away alt and I imagine that's the only place to wear them and with gray pants. The blue jays retro powder blues are aways (like they were in the day) but the Jays wear them at home if I'm not mistaken. Kinda funny seeing Mauer in the Twins road unis on the cover, but I think they shelved that uni.

Okay, league update.

We're going to cap the number of teams to 12.

Here's how the league works. We are going to have 12 teams, two 6 team divisions. The top two teams from each division advance to the playoffs (4 teams total).

Each team will play two 3 game series vs their division opponents and 1 3 game series against non division opponents. You have to play one 3 game series every 5 days. If we go at that pace, we will finish our season in 11 weeks and play a total of 48 games.

Tentative start date for our league will coincide with the actual MLB opening day. The winner of each season we play will be awarded a trophy from yours truly.

The league name will be High Def League and one division will be named Budweiser and the other will be Miller or Coors or some other beer name (suggestions appreciated!). Our league slogan is Beer Me!. hehehe.

Anyways, I have to wait 14 days before I can create the league and send out the invites per MLB THE SHOW rules.

We will be playing on All-Star difficulty, so practice accordingly.

Let's have some fun!

SOBAY310
03-03-2010, 10:20 AM
Remember, these are just preliminary league ideas. If you think 3 games in 5 days is too much, let me know and we can go a different route. Remember, those 3 games are going to be against the same opponent, so you guys could probably just block out a couple hours and take care of all 3 games, or plan it over the 5 days. It's a lot easier than having to hunt down and schedule with 3 different teams.

I'm also may ask what time zone everyone is in. If we have enough people on both sides of the coast I can make the two divisions east and west so that you play most of your games within or close to your time zone.

I played a game online last night. It is vastly improved from the last Show I played ('08). It does stutter at times, but the reaction time on the pitching meter and at the plate are very good.

This thread makes me want to cry. I've been playing the show for the last 2 years and the on line seems fixed....but my ps3 is not working (not reading discs). From the brief game I played, I should be able to pick up from 09 with little issue. I haven't played much at all-star though, but I should still be able to handle the Reds and such.

I have set up a Spring Training League. It's just a 6 team league, one 3 game series per week. Seven days in between series. Top team from each division plays in the world series.

The spring training league will only last 5 weeks...right around the time we will start the official league. This is a good way to get familiar with the league setup, or knock some rust off.

The league invite will go to the first 6 people that get the game, sign into the SHOW online interface, accept or add me as a friend. I will then send you the league invite.

So far the only two people I see on my buddy list are War Eagle and Strikuh, with pending buddy invites to a few others.

That whole experience is even better this year. No game has ever simulated the sport of baseball nearly as well as MLB '10: The Show simulates the sport, it is simply a must own for anyone who even remotely considers themselves a baseball fan.

Chris' MLB '10: The Show Rating: 5/5

Each 5 days you are set up with an opponent. Over those 5 days you play 3 games against each other.

The schedule will be generated through the league interface. We have our own little hub through the game, and they will also be releasing a website for us to view standings, schedules, stats, etc.

It's really cool.

I got it on the PS3. This may turn into my nightly game while the wife sleeps. I would wait until after Monday to start any leagues. The word is the 2nd patch and roster update will come out that day. It's very impressive how on point sony is with this game. The first patch cleaned up a ton of stuff that reviewers pointed out with their pre-retail copy. Then consider how much more they are fixing or improving with this second patch. Man i hope some sites like O.S. do a second review.

Here is a side by side comparison on CNET. com

MLB 2K10 vs. MLB 10: The Show
by Jeff Bakalar, Scott Stein and David Carnoy Font size Print E-mail Share 1 comment Yahoo! BuzzShare4
Just as spring training arrives, so do the year's two Major League Baseball games. Though this season always reminds us of the gone-but-never-forgotten MVP franchise, we're happy to report that both offerings do the sport justice.

Jeff:
PS3 owners will have to make the decision between MLB 2K10 and MLB 10: The Show, as the latter is a PS3-exclusive title. That said, Xbox 360 owners won't be shut out of a good game, as 2K10 has finally broken the streak of disappointing baseball titles. In fact, this year's effort is the one of the best improvements year over year we've seen in a very long time.

Pitching in 2K10 remains the most difficult to master (pitching is done via two-step gestures with the right stick), but it only took us about five full games before we felt comfortable with our delivery. Where 2K has transferred most of the game's action (hitting and pitching) to the right thumb stick, MLB 10 remains traditional with more conventional button-based mechanics. We're not sure either way is the "right" way, but we definitely had an easier time making contact with the ball in The Show. Check swings in MLB 10 were also a nice advantage in the batter's box, as the game offers three different types of animations for doing so.

(Credit: SCEA)
More so than in years past, both MLB 2K10 and MLB 10 allow the batter to see the ball fairly well, as we found ourselves taking pitches as often as we swung. The Show lets you guess an incoming pitch--ultimately giving you a better idea what's coming even if you're wrong--and 2K10 flashes the name of a pitch if it's not delivered perfectly.

Probably the most frustrating element of a bad baseball game is fielding, but this year both titles provide a very satisfying defensive experience. Animations are very realistic on both fronts, with diving catches and double plays sticking out the most. We couldn't help but notice the sort-of autopilot mode outfielders go in for pop-ups, but we suppose there isn't much to complain about with those routine plays.

We really enjoyed MLB 2K10's new MLB Today feature, that (with an Internet connection) keeps your game fully updated with the latest rosters, scratches, and injuries. There's a certain satisfaction in playing with a lineup that reflects what's going on in spring training, opposed to playing MLB 10 with fully loaded teams and players who won't be healthy in time for opening day.

MLB 2K10 has completely revamped its presentation, and the end result is a more TV-centric experience than what's found in The Show. MLB 10's overall action is probably a bit more realistic, speaking from a baseball sim standpoint, but 2K10's packaging felt more like a broadcast.

It should be clear that we're very pleased with both baseball games this year. Ultimately, the decision to buy should be made depending on which console you own and whether you prefer button-based action or the adoption of the right thumb stick. Sure, both games offer improvements over their predecessors, but the advancements in MLB 2K10 far outweigh those in MLB 10: The Show.

(Credit: 2K)
Scott:
Every season for at least as many years as I can recently remember, MLB 2K10 and The Show have faced off, with The Show becoming widely regarded as the premier baseball game, and 2K10 holding court as the only multiplatform option. From the perspective of simple, easy-to-pick-up play, MLB The Show 10 still wins out. The reason, simply enough, is the continued Madden-like adoption of most old-school controls rather than inventing new ones. This lets old players and even PSP players slip right in and get comfy, and spend the time saved on nuances in gameplay. Graphically, The Show still looks fantastic, with realistic ball travel and perfect lighting, but the step forward from '09 isn't as dramatic as last year's.

MLB 2K10 was a pleasant surprise; the presentation and even the graphics seemed better than expected, smoother and less buggy. Between innings, the game even felt like a broadcast. The default reliance on analog-stick moves for both pitching and batting, though a noble effort, are still extremely difficult to use. We've seen similar ideas in the Sega Olympics games and in the Fight Night series, but in a game so timing-based as baseball, split-second quick button presses seem like a better match than mushier analog. Either that, or I'm a terrible player, which could indeed be the case. Both games have a number of real-time roster update options, but focusing on the main nine-inning event, The Show still feels more fun, but by degrees rather than by a landslide.

(Credit: SCEA)
David:
Well, for starters, I should say that I played 2K Sports' MLB 2K2010 first (on the PS3), which was probably a good thing. I'd gotten an early look at MLB 10: The Show a few months ago, but it wasn't fresh in my mind, so I came at the 2K title from a somewhat unbiased perspective. My initial reaction was OK, this is pretty good, definitely improved from last year, and much better presentation overall--from the graphics to the features and commentary.

Since the million-dollar contest mode is still available, I mainly played that, but my longest perfect game only lasts three innings. Some people are really turned off by the gesture-based pitching mechanics using the analog stick, but it didn't bother me that much--or at least as much as it bothered other editors I've spoken with. I didn't mind working a bit to pitch and actually found the hitting more bothersome and less natural than the Show's hitting mechanics.

The interesting thing about MLB 2K10 is that if you were reviewing it in a vacuum, it would actually comes across as a very good game of baseball. But alas, as soon as you move over to playing Sony's title, your impression of the 2K game starts to diminish. From a pure presentation and gameplay standpoint, The Show is just incredibly impressive. And though there's always room for improvement, I think it ranks up there with the best sports games ever created. The players just look better, the stadiums feel more true-to-life (like 2K Games, Sony has improved the crowds), and the overall gameplay just feels smoother. It's hard to say exactly how much Sony's game is enhanced over last year's, but there's enough of an improvement this go 'round to justify spending another 60 bucks, particularly now that there's a Home Run Derby on board. Also, on the pitching end of things, you can call a game from the catcher's perspective (it's kind of cool, but I think the majority of people will prefer to be the pitcher).

For all of you who own an Xbox 360 and aren't quite ready to add a PS3 to your gaming arsenal, MLB 2K10 is still a decent game that's probably worth picking up. However, at the end of the day, though the gap between the two titles has narrowed--and 2K Sports is definitely moving in the right direction--Sony's game is still in a league of its own.

(Credit: 2K)

I wonder if that's why they show you who is umping that game. maybe as the season progresses you need to learn the umps as well.

That sounds like real life to me. They always say in baseball games you need to get used to what the ump considers the strike zone. And it is different for all of them. I'm sure there's a reasonable guideline they follow. But when they show the computer charts on TV the umps are always off the mark, but that's part of the game.

I have the game and I should have my new ps3 slim by the 1st week of April or maybe earlier. The one thing I can't control is the availability of the ps3, they seem to be sold out everywhere at the moment. If you guys are ready to start though, go ahead without me I don't want to hold you guys up.

Remember, I'm playing with a AAA team (the Pittsburgh Pirates) and due to baseball coaching, if I'm not available or we can't hook up, go ahead and sim. I'm quite sure you'll get the same results :D

Yo Sobes! Just opened her up this afternoon. Very satisfied. Will be buying the game from Gamefly.

But, how do I join our league? I didn't see anywhere for an invite, and since I don't have the case or instruction manual yet, I don't have much reference.

SOBAY310

Kammy, once I get the confirmed headcount I'll fire off the invites. Let's planning on getting this thing fired up in early April. I figure whoever is bored with the game by April wouldn't stick with the league anyways. In case you want to practice with our league settings, here they are:

Difficulty: All-Star
Guess Pitch: Off
Stirke Zone: On
Hot Zones: Off
Pitching type: Meter
Baserunning style: New

We'll have two divisions, one for the east coasters and one for the west coasters.

So, everyone has 3 or 4 weeks to practice up. Add each other on the PSN as well as the Sportsconnect MLB the SHOW interface and scrimmage each other. :) Try to practice with those settings though.

SOBAY310
03-16-2010, 09:49 AM
Hey, Zak!

I'm usually up 'til around midnight or so on the weekdays. Thursday I'll probably jump on around 10:30p or so. :)

Right now the gaming peeps are working out the kinks of the league, so hopefully in a few weeks when opening day hits they should have it all ironed out. We'll also have opening day rosters to play with.

We have some solid commitments....just a few more weeks.

Zak
03-16-2010, 03:19 PM
I'll try and be on around 11 on thursday. let's see if we can sneak a game in. i gotta warn you, I've played like only two games right now, and in one of them only got three hits... and that's with guess pitch on. So yeah, so far I suck.

SOBAY310
03-16-2010, 04:37 PM
We can play with guess pitch on, Zak. I'm not about the winning or losing, just having fun. :) Unless I play Kam or Dre or Cracker. I need to beat those guys down hard! LOL.

I'll be on late Thursday...we'll give it a go if you're around. :)

I had a friggin' epic game last night. One of the most fun I've had playing online...ever. I was down 2 in the bottom of the 9th. The other dude was the Phillies and brought in Brad Lidge. I rallied to tie the game and we go extra innings.

In the top of the 10th he goes up 2. At this point, the Phillies are now up 8 to 5. I have Kemp, Ethier, Manny, and Loney coming up. Kemp pops out, Ethier gets a single, Manny hits a two run home run to tie it! I know people get pissed after a home run and just throw a fastball, so I sit on it with Loney and Loney blasts one over the right field wall for the win!!!!

"I Love LA" starts to blast as Loney trots around the bases and SOBAY does a cartwheel in his living room at 1am!!

Sweet. We are going to have a good league, just waiting on the following things:

1. Patch to fix league issues such as disconnects and stat errors
2. Disco Batman is moving the first week of April
3. Pfalvey is getting a replacement PS3
4. Opening Day Rosters

I'd expect we'll be rolling mid-April.

I prefer using the sticks like in the 2k series, and it will take some getting used to the meter settings. Also I don't like pitching from batter view, and isn't that what it automatically does in multi-player? Or is it like 2k series when playing in on-line you can have pitcher view?

I can say for sure that they are testing a 3D version of the game, whether or not it will pass testing and be released when the ps3's 3d update is released isn't for sure.

Okay boys, here we go. I have set up our League Board/Website. We are still going to begin the season in a few weeks as planned, but I want everyone to get situation here:
http://gamingleagues.freeforums.org/

Please post in the league sign up thread!

Oh, yes, there is an arcade installed on that site. :)

If you think you may not have the time to play your games (3 per week), then reconsider signing up. If you join and then flake, it hurts everyone else.

I am capping it at 8 teams.
