ESPN 2 HD on DirecTV

I just got an HD email update from Broadcasting Cable.com that stated DirecTV will begin carrying ESPN2HD on September 8...It's about time...

TOP STORY
ESPN2 HD's Direct Hit
ESPN launched ESPN2-HD with much fanfare last January at the Consumer Electronics Association show (CES) in Las Vegas. Much fanfare, but not many viewers. That changes on Sept. 8 when DirecTV finally delivers the channel to its 700,000 HD subscribers. The companies announced a deal months ago, but never said when the new service would launch on the nation's dominant satellite carrier. Until now, only Adelphia and Mediacom viewers have actually received ESPN2 HD.
The launch is great news for ESPN as the network has been producing ESPN2 events in HD since last January, adding to the cost of those productions, but with little return on investment. The addition of DirecTV's HD subscribers changes that.
"I think we'll have an equal number of event telecasts on ESPN HD and ESPN2 HD from Sept. 1 through the end of the year," says Bryan Burns, ESPN VP, strategic planning and business development.
The inaugural ESPN2-HD event on DirecTV on Sept. 8 is a college football game from Miami between Oklahoma State vs. Florida Atlantic. On Sept. 10 they'll be able to tune into another college game (expect ESPN and ESPN2 to air 70 college games in HD this fall) when Pittsburgh squares off against Ohio University.
Burns believes DirecTV's carriage is a tipping point both for the network and HD in general. And he says those distributors that don't feed HD owners' demand for content will put their customers at competitive risk.
"I'm not sure most in our industry understand what is about to happen in living rooms across America," he says. "I think there is going to be a dramatic increase in consumer demand for 16x9 HD this fall and 2006 is going to be the year we will look back and say, "that's when it turned the corner."

This "news" is encouraging. I hope it is accurate and wish DTV would post it on their web site. And yes, TNT-HD is the real key.

I enjoy this forum, I was just reading until recently I decided to sign up and start posting.
I read on here all the time about how DTV sucks and when are they going to have this and when are they going to have this.
They are screwing me... etc......
If they are so bad why are they spending millions of dollars to put 4 new satellites in the air loaded with the latest tech. Just beacuse we rant and rave every day on this forum doesn't make getting satellites in orbit in space and working an easy deal. And as for new channels.. Where I work we can't make can't make a decision on when to have a meeting without a meeting for that. So you come on here and say oh my god I emailed them yesterday about TNT and today they still don't have it, cmon folks, Million dollar deals don't happen overnight.
I'm not saying that are doing everything right there are customer service people that suck and some that are good. Some prices are high and some low, But HD costs money and you will pay for it one way or the other. To close I would like to say DTV will be the provider with the most HD period when all is said and done and it won't be cheap, so just be patient and keep your wallet handy.

I agree with last post. Stop being negative. Directv estimated they would have HD locals in place by summer and now it is pushed back to this fall and or late 2005. It will be available when it is available. Just be glad we all have this technology and that Directv is working on improving HD content. I also agree when it's all said and done Directv will show the way in HD.

well then direct tv should lower the 10.99 price to 5.00 until it has all it's programming or stories straight. :yippee:

.....or just double or triple the cost of the HD package when they add all of the new channels! :hithere:

I have DTV Platinum at about $92/mth. But since I got HD, I rarely watch anything else. So the way I figure it, I am already paying about $92+/mth for my HD from DTV
