3d ps3?

01-27-2010, 11:12 AM
I've seen stories saying the PS3 will be able to do 3D Blu-Ray, but existing units don't have HDMI 1.4 outputs, so how is that supposed to work?

It was big talk with all of the 3D TVs being shown at CES. I am not exactly sure how it will go about it, but many existing HD TVs are also being touted 3D ready and needing a firmware update.

The main change with 1.4 HDMI is the addition of Ethernet capability.

Presumably 3D will work over 1.3, otherwise Sony wouldn't be able to just firmware upgrade a PS3 for 3D content.

HDMI 1.4 faq...

.. doesn't say 1.4 is required for 3D...

The 1.4 version of the specification defines common 3D formats and resolutions for HDMI-enabled devices, enabling 3D gaming and other 3D video applications. The specification standardizes the input/output portion of the home 3D system, facilitating 3D resolutions up to dual-stream 1080p.
