Why threads get locked...

Razor05

Why is it that threads get locked? Let's use the example of the recent 'Bungie: "Halo: Reach for Us is Not Halo 4" '. Was it because of the thread itself was in poor taste? No. Was it because the thread provided useless information and had no relevance to gaming? No. Maybe because of the responses made? It happens way too much where someone who dislikes a certain company or game decides to derail it. They jack it and start flaming, and cry fanboyism. Really, who are the fanboys here? Maybe we should have a new rule, if you don't have anything good to say, then don't say it. I personally was interested in that thread, since the game is slated for a fall release. If anything should be locked, it should be the ones who continue to jack good threads because of their own personal issues. Just my :2cents

The OP was barely OK, there weren't enough disclaimers about opinion vs fact though. Then the Gaylo posts just put the icing on the cake.

Nothing good was going to come out of it.

There are a ton of ways to discuss Reach here without posting uninformed blurbs about Xbox 3 launch games, Xbox 3 launch dates, Bungie even making Halo 4, etc. etc.

A general "Halo Reach hype thread" would be great. I know I'm hyped for the game.

I just really don't see a point in just making fun of a game if you don't like it. I have a hard time understanding what it accomplishes. If you don't like a game thats fine but no need to make fun of it.

OK I just reread the thread.

-Cygnus forgetting qualify the part about Halo 4 launching with Xbox 3 next year as purely poorly informed opinion.

-We had some Mario vs Master Chief action going on.

-Halo vs. Gaylo

-Junehan wishing Bungie would license UE3 for Halo Reach

Sounds like a good idea. I would tell SAL to do it but I don't think he likes Halo, so one of the other Xboxers will have to do it. I'm not qualified. :(

After seeing gameplay screens for this on a different forum, I'm kind of excited for this as long as it's Natal compatible. The graphics look pretty good and I'm sure there will be 360/Natal bundles with a low-ish price point so I can get a great deal on a 360 as well. :D

Considering what we've seen UE3 do for many games out there, not a bad wish to have considering how graphically disappointing Halo ODST was. It wasn't bad, but just wasn't up to the standard set by the most recent games.

Reach looks stunning. There are also heavy rumors (with some alpha screen caps for proof) that there will be a persistent weapon customization system in both SP and MP.

ie: extended clip, reduced recoil, etc.

The art design is Bungie, so it's fantastic, and the tech hopefully is a lot better than Halo 3's.

One cool fact that could be trouble as far as performance goes: the assault rifle in Halo Reach has more polygons than an entire marine in Halo 3.

So hopefully Bungie has found some good optimization shortcuts to make this happen at 30fps, vsync, 1280x720 and at least 2xAA. I don't think that's too much to ask for a console game.

I never felt Halo 3 was pushing the 360 much at all, I think they focussed on ensuring a smooth online experience. I'm sure the 360 could more than handle a severe upping in polygon counts

More polys mean more surfaces to apply anti aliasing though.

We know Bungie and AA don't have the best track record.

You are grasping at straws here. The majority of posts here are opinion. Besides, I did qualify the post with "I expect" as opposed to "I know for a fact..." Additionally "poorly informed" is your opinion.

The discussion in the thread was good except for one person. The more rational action would be to possibly delete the offensive replies instead of locking the entire thread in my humble opinion.

BTW, good thread razor :hithere:

I just like to get my 2 cents in on this one as i was the one who made the "gaylo" comments.

Its just a tongue in cheek thing that cygnus and I have going on just for fun. He gives most ps3 games funny names like L.A.G (Lag, Action, Game) God Of Bore 3, Gran Torino 5 and I (and others) give 360 games funny names like Gears (or Tears) of Bore, Gaylo, and others. Nothing malicious is meant by it and its just for laughs.

Once again Its all meant for a laugh and if it has offended anyone than im truly sorry.

Keep in mind the last thread I locked before the one in question was my own thread (the one trolling IGN and GLOWs love for Sony) because of some bad comments.

I started by just deleting the offending posts, but that was like fuel to the fire and I had to end up locking it.

Yes, the Venom's posts spurred the lock of Cyg's thread. We can discuss Microsoft's plans for Halo 4 in a new thread, or our Reach thread.

Threads shouldn't be locked because of reasons like this. If someone dislikes for example Halo, then don't post just to start crap and get the thread locked. That's really lame. It's done alot more with games like Halo and anything connected with MS. The same as with this gaming forum, it seems heavily one-sided.

Anyone who want to specifically discuss Bungie and their input on Halo 4 is free to open a new thread.

If the community wants thread derails to be punished more severely, don't forget that it cuts both ways.

So please, fellas, keep it clean. Especially when it comes to anything to do with race or sexuality. Those are insta-locks, and if abused, insta-bans.

And I hope I never have to ban anyone (except for Glennb1, that was fun).

Unfortunately, that is the fact of life. Retards have always been existant in life(the real retards, not those who are mentally handicapped). The internet has simply given them an outlet to crawl from under their rock, and stir things up without any consequence since they get to hide behind their computer screen. When some of us are having ourselves a little dance, retards seem to love barging their way into the middle of our party, and crapping on our floor.

However, I agree that the offending posts or poster should be deleted from the thread first, as some of us non-frat-boy Halo or M$ fans don't like having our party shut down prematurely.

Oh COME ON PEOPLE, give me a break, after all we are talking about little plastic TOYS here dont get so offended. With all the problems we face in this world (financial crisis, hunger, war) I cant believe people are getting so butthurt over a video game. What do you want us to do, all sit around in a little circle and sing Coombayaa?? Do you think the people of Haiti care that someone called halo "gaylo" I think not.

We should all take a deep breath and put things into perspective.

Oh and by the way, I think its more offensive calling someone a retard than calling a VIDEO GAME "gaylo"

Let's not send this thread the same way as that one. The one thing I'm not so sure on is sanctions for people taking threads off topic, that is kinda a staple of HDF as almost all threads on here in the other sections wind up completely off topic. The fact that it isn't overly moderated with "GTF back on topic BIATCH!" mods is what makes it so relaxed here.

I'm not so much as directing my comments at you, rather than what we've seen in the past. Some of us who have been here for a while know that there have been far worse than the little bit of fun you had. For some of us, it is too vivid in our memory as we used to have some serious trolls in this forum.

Personally, I don't believe in censorship or moderating something except that there really are super retards like those who trolled here in the past that really do nothing but crap on posts. For some of us, it is still vivid in our memory.

Yeah I can delete posts. Usually only spam or really really bad stuff by current members that I don't want to have to ban them for.

That's why I just lock threads that get off topic in the truly offensive way. I don't want anyone to get banned, so I try to just stop the thing in it's tracks.

I'm expected to keep this place somewhat clean, and I try to do so with the least amount of hands on interference. There are rules that are above my volunteer pay grade.

It can sometimes seem like a thankless job you do here as a mod and it can be hard to keep the site running smooth and not offend anyone all the time, but the mods like you do it so we ALL have a great place to post and we spend countless hours doing it for free as volunteers so that we continue to have such a great place.

How does that saying go? "You can please most of the people most of the time, but you cannot please all of the people all of the time."

It is a tightrope walk for mods to keep freedom with postings and still keep the place under control at the same time. It is more of an art form and I think Kamspy is doing a fantastic job walking that tightrope and I thank him for giving of so much of his time to help! :yippee:
