I just bought my first flat panel. I got it home and set it up and its not what I was hoping. Hopfully I just dont have some settings right and hope someone can help me out. When I am watching it the picture looks good on the HD channels but if the people start moving or any type of movement it gets blury. and if I watch a show on a non HD channel it really looks like crap. my old tube TV looked a lot better. It just doesnt seem right that i would have to watch a TV show that is blury just because it doesnt come in HD. So with that said here is what I have......Samsung 52" LCD 630. 80,000:1 , 1080P 120hz. Viewing distance is about 10ft. Well lit room. I have comcast with the HD DVR box. Thanks in advance for any help or advice you can give me. Let me know if there is any more info I can give.

you really cant do anything about either problem. one of the downfalls of an lcd is the motion problems.

and sd content will not look good on the bigger sized flat screens. not much you can do about it.

if the motion blur is a problem, i would recommend you buy a plasma

would downsizeing to a 46 LCD help any? maybe getting one with better specs? like 150,000:1 and 240hz?

Downsizing might make the picture more crisp. But upping the specs wouldn't do much IMO. Especially the 240Hz, marketing BS IMO, along with 120Hz. Some people see a difference, I see none, BTW.

contrast ratios are inflated and pointless. no tv has a contrast ratio of 150,000:1. its all marketing

any reason you cant get a plasma?

Most definitely. As long as your not using it for a computer monitor or you can't control the lighting at all during the day, if you even watch during the day. Even if you can't control it I would still get a plasma and find a way to control it.

Speaking of plasma; I just thought I should tell everyone that when I went to my BB with a magnolia and I saw the Z1.... oohh man, love at first sight. It had beautiful, and I mean beautiful picture. I don't understand you guys and this silver bezel thing, that PQ was awesome.

yeah the z1 is a great set. we almost got the z1, but they wanted like 6k for the 54". just wasnt worth it when we coulda had the 65" v10 for 2k less

Yeah the price is ridiculous, definitely not worth it, you can get a Kuro for less. The Kuro in this Magnolia didn't amaze me though, it looked just as good as the Panasonic next to it.

And yes I know you can't completely judge them even in the dark rooms, but I still expected it to look better. I tried messing with all the setting but none of the remotes would work.

I had called the BB where I bought it from and told them I was not pleased with the TV. they said to bring it back and they would exchange it for me with no problem. Right now I think I am really leaning towards a plasma. I will give this LCD credit on one thing is that when I put a blu-ray in the picture is awesome! The plasma will still have the awesome picture right?

If blu-ray looks great than it's obviously not the tv that is under performing. Are you sure everything is hooked up right? Is the cable output at 1080i?

Even with that said in a dimly lit room (not an extremely bright room) the plasma will outperform your LCD. It's picture will be more than awesome.

From my experience with my 2 LCDs, 1 DLP, and 1 Panasonic plasma, I found the SD channels look much better on the plasma despite being a bigger screen. Of course the black levels, motion, etc. is also better with my plasma.

Plasmas work more like CRTs in that each pixel is self illuminating whereas LCD works by color filters of a constant back light.

Yes I believe the cable is putting out 1080i. I am using all HDMI cables. Like I said the blu-ray looks great and the HD channels look great too until things start to move around quickly. My biggest issue is the non HD channels are very blury even when there isnt much motion. The picture quality stinks. Do you think if I got the plasma the non HD channels will look at least as good as my old tube TV?

If you had set the LCD up correctly, it probably would have been fine.

Flat panel TV's require a set-up, they are not plug-and-play as tube TV's were.

Plasma is OK, but a well set-up LCD will still give you an amazing quality picture. Especially in a bright viewing environment.

That almost sounds like you might be getting a heavily compressed signal as well as some LCD motion issues. What cable company do you have? Id call them and ask if they can check signal strength on your incoming lines and make sure the cabling is in good condition. Might be worth a shot. I know that LCDs suffer from motion blur but this sounds worse than just that. Could be wrong, just sometghing to also look into before going through the hassle of a return.

I agree any LCD for the most part will give a great picture, something most people would be plenty happy with.

Right now I have comcast cable. From talking to a few people today they said that direct TV is much better quality. Any truth or opinions about this?

I don't know anything about comcast, but I know my Dish HD is just as good as Direct PQ wise. Personally to me that and price are all that matter, have all the same channels.

Well I went into BB this morning and exchanged my 52 LCD for a 50 Plasma. Went with the Samsung 550. It looked great in the store and got it home and set it up and WOW! What a difference from the LCD. Right out of the box it looks awesome!
